  • Larian Studios has opened a new studio in Warsaw to assist with the development of two ambitious new RPGs.
  • The new projects mark a departure from Baldur's Gate 3 content updates.
  • Larian's expansion provides opportunities for more developers, amid a climate of video game layoffs.

Larian Studios, the developer behind last year's critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, has announced that it is opening a new studio to assist with "two very ambitious RPGs now starting development." Baldur's Gate 3 became an instant classic when it was released in August 2023, but now, Larian Studios is moving fast onto its next projects.

Earlier this year, Larian shocked the gaming world by confirming it would not be part of any Baldur's Gate 3 DLC or sequel. Although the studio has continued to work on new patches for the game, new content has been in short supply. Previously, Baldur's Gate 3 DLC was seen as a sure thing thanks to the massive success of the game, but this was not part of Larian's vision. Instead, it teased that it was planning more projects of its own, and now it seems that Larian is gearing up to start the development of these titles.

Baldur's Gate 3's limitations on character creation thrusts one somewhat polarizing Dungeons and Dragons feature into the spotlight.

In an announcement on Twitter, Larian confirmed that it has opened a brand-new studio in Warsaw, and is accepting open applications for any talented individuals who feel they have skills to offer the team. The new Polish developer will assist with "two very ambitious RPGs now starting development," confirming that Larian is finally moving on to its new projects. Considering the two games are now just at the earliest stages of development, it will likely be some time before Larian is ready to talk about these projects. However, with Larian heading some of the best modern-day CRPGs ever, it's still something to be massively excited about going forward.

Larian Opens New Studio in Warsaw

Larian's Warsaw studio becomes its seventh worldwide. Its headquarters is located in Ghent, Belgium, while it also has locations in Quebec City (Canada), Dublin (Ireland), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Guildford (United Kingdom), and Barcelona (Spain). In a dreadful period of video game layoffs across the entire industry, it's great to see a studio thriving and giving developers all around the world the opportunity to show off their talents.

While the gaming community is sure to be interested in what Larian Studios does going forward, many will also be curious about what the Baldur's Gate franchise brings to the table, too. Hasbro has already confirmed that a Baldur's Gate 3 sequel is happening, but it plans to take some time to ensure the right developer is chosen for the task. After all, living up to Larian's lofty standards is going to be a tough task, and gamers will always compare a new Baldur's Gate game to previous entries in the series. Let's wait and see what studio takes up the mantle going forward.
