Highlights

  • Players should avoid buying weapons without enchantments from merchants in Baldur's Gate 3 , as they can find better weapons with special abilities while exploring.
  • Don't waste gold on alchemical ingredients like mushrooms, as they can easily be found in the wild while exploring the game.
  • Instead of buying small bits of food from merchants, focus on picking up enough rations to have successful long rests, as this allows players to regain spell slots and hit points.

Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the greatest adventures of 2023 from the CRPG genre, with plenty of side quests to get involved in and an incredibly well-thought-out main story too. Many of these adventures will reward the player with incredible gear to use. Although sometimes, a player may favor visiting a merchant for better supplies.

Merchants can be found almost anywhere in Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3) and will offer all sorts of goods to the player that may pique their fancy. However, some of these items aren't as useful as they first appear, and that's why players should avoid spending their gold on these merchants or specific situations.

5 Weapons With No Enchantments

As mentioned, merchants can sell all sorts of valuable goods for the player to purchase with their gold coins. However, sometimes these items aren't worth it. Players are likely to find some interesting weaponry – or even armor – being sold by the merchants around BG3, but unless this item has a promising buff or enchantment, it's better to stay away from the merchant. As players explore, they are likely to find all sorts of weaponry that can be used by themselves or their party members.

These can be basic weapons or even ones that come with their own special abilities. Due to this, it makes buying any normal weapon obsolete at a merchant unless it does more damage or has a better ability than the player's currently equipped weapon. Players shouldn't be afraid to try new weapons because of this, but a party shouldn't be sacrificing the gold they have earned from adventuring to fulfill these curiosities.

4 Alchemical Ingredients

The alchemical ingredient Balsam in Baldur's Gate 3

Players were unable to explore the possibilities of alchemy in the early access version of Baldur's Gate 3; many of the herbs or mushrooms found in the game were instead used as camp supplies to keep the player's party afloat. However, with the game releasing on the third of August, players have finally been able to combine different ingredients together to make some interesting potions and poisons that will benefit a player both in and out of battle.

These ingredients can be easily found while exploring BG3, especially with specific areas providing different resources to experiment with. Some merchants will even sell various herbs, plants, and other reagents that the player can purchase to make their lives easier. Although this is available, it's recommended not to waste on the available mushrooms as it's not so difficult to find many of the much-needed ingredients in the wild.

3 Small Bits Of Rations

The food item a whole chicken in Baldur's Gate 3

Being able to long rest in Baldur's Gate 3 is incredibly important as it allows the player to gain back all the spell slots they have used while also regenerating all their hit points. Unless the player has rations to use or camp supplies, they will be unable to successfully have a long rest in BG3 and instead will only receive half of the benefits available. To successfully long rest, the player must have rations that equal forty; each food item will give a different number of supplies which means players should always be picking up food.

When in a pinch, food can also be purchased from a merchant, though it may be better to buy actual camp supplies from the merchant instead of small bits of food. Although the player is likely to be out in the wild for some time, it isn't as hard as a player would think to find the necessary food items needed to keep the camp happy, and therefore, the merchant can be used to purchase other things.

2 Various Spell Scrolls

A Scroll of Fear in Baldur's Gate 3

As seen through ranking each class in Baldur's Gate 3, spellcaster classes show a lot of promise both in and out of combat due to the variety of spells they can use to their advantage. However, through the power of spell scrolls, even those that are not as attuned to the weave can go about flinging spells. These scrolls can be found almost anywhere, with them only having one use before a player must find another scroll with the same power.

They also sell for quite a nice amount of gold coins too, though players will only want to sell the ones that they are not going to use. Selling for a pretty penny also means merchants are likely to sell them to the player for an awful amount. Depending on the level of the spell, this will also affect how much it will cost. Players will have a better chance of finding these scrolls than buying them unless it's a scroll that the player needs crucially.

1 Bribing Individuals In BG3

Finally, the last thing players should never spend their gold on is other NPCs in Baldur's Gate 3. It isn't just merchants that will want the players' gold, as some situations will require the player to give away a pouch full of coins; if they wish to pass a goblin roadblock or find out some information for a quest, the player may feel pressured to select the option that gives an NPC a hundred gold.

In Baldur's Gate 3, a player is able to make whatever choices they want, and that also means finding alternate ways to get what they want too. In some situations where bribing is involved, a player can use their charisma through persuasion, deception, or intimidation to avoid having to hand over a single coin. In some other cases, there are ways to fulfill these things even outside of dialogue if the player pays attention to their surroundings.

Baldur's Gate 3 is out now on PC; the PlayStation 5 version releases on September 6th, 2023.
