In Baldur's Gate 3, there are a ton of hidden interactions and events that are only revealed when the player takes very specific actions, intentionally or otherwise. One notable example of this is Gale's contingency plan, which is only revealed in the event of his death.

Since Gale is one of Baldur's Gate 3's squishier party members, this event is likely to get triggered by accident, especially when getting used to the game's combat system. In the aftermath of Gale's death a scene will be triggered involving a conjured specter of Gale providing instructions on his resurrection.

How to Resurrect Gale

A bard playing the lute to inspire Gale in Baldur's Gate 3

Immediately after Gale's death, players will automatically trigger dialog with a ghostly version of Gale. If he died during combat, this conversation won't trigger until the combat has ended. The apparition explains that Gale prepared for his death and has stashed a Scroll on his person that can be used to revive him. Gale protected this scroll with a multistep process to prevent someone from accessing the scroll without his instruction, and will then proceed to explain how to retrieve the scroll.

After Gale has completed his set of instructions, which includes reciting specific phrases in Ignan to a summoned Mephit. He will then quiz the player on the instructions, though there is no penalty for failing here and the rest of the party will chime in with the correct answers if any mistakes are made.

Once the ghostly Gale has finished explaining the process and quizzing the player, he will disappear. Players will now need to retrieve the pouch he mentioned from Gale's corpse and interact with it in the inventory. When interacting with it and, afterward, the objects inside it, players will need to select the correct options (as described by Gale earlier) to retrieve the scroll. Here's the process, step-by-step, since it can be a little tricky to remember:

  • When Opening the Pouch, unthread the purple seam counter-clockwise.
  • Grab the flute and Position fingers to play individual notes.
  • Play the notes: D, E, A, D.
  • Respond to the Mephit's Question with "K’ha’ssji’trach’ash.”
  • Hand the Letter to the Creature

Once the creature is done breathing fire on the letter, it will become a Scroll of Revivify. Players can then use this to revive Gale, triggering some extra dialog and allowing players to discuss resurrecting him at camp later on.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available now for PC and Mac, and on September 6th, 2023, for PS5.
