Skinburster Skills & Buffs

  • Skinburster Force: When the wielder deals melee damage with this weapon, they gain 2 turns of Force Conduit.
  • Force Conduit: Bludgeoning, Piercing and Slashing damage against the affected entity is reduced by 1 per turn remaining. If the entity takes damage while it has 5 or more turns remaining, it deals 1d4 Force damage in a 6m radius. These charges are expended.

In other words, hitting an attack will provide 2 turns of Force Conduit - so you want to prioritize utilizing this weapon with a character who can dish out multiple hits in a single turn, usually through Extra Attack, with a Bonus Action follow-up attack of some kind. By doing so, you will be able to gain 5 turns in a single round, meaning the next time you take damage, you will deal the 1d4 Force Damage in a radius, without expending a Reaction or any other resources.

This extra damage between turns is such a powerful bonus, as it will certainly add up across the duration of an encounter. To maximize effectiveness, there are multiple approaches you can take. First of all, Barbarians, Fighters, and Paladins are the best choices to consider for wielding Halberds, as they operate highly efficiently on the frontline, and can tank incoming damage much more reliably than the squishier Classes.

Great Weapon Master is a Feat that can make Halberds hit significantly harder, essentially operating as a melee variant of the Sharpshooter Feat, taking a -5 to Attack Rolls, but a +10 to Damage Rolls. Alongside Great Weapon Master, the Sentinel and Polearm Master Feats make a very powerful combination to consider. As Fighters gain more Feats than any other Class in the game, this trio of Feats plus an Ability Increase to necessary stat make a great combination.

Polearm Master lets you make a Bonus Attack with the blunt side of your Halberd each turn, but this is not the most important aspect of the Feat. The real power of this ability comes from the option to make an Opportunity Attack whenever an enemy enters your Range. As Halberds are Reach Weapons, this melee range is extended, and will also synergize with Sentinel, which lets you make an Opportunity Attack whenever an enemy within your range attacks an ally. The combination of these Feats means that with proper positioning, you will pretty much be able to ensure you make an Opportunity Attack every round of combat, which will both help deal extra bursts of damage through Great Weapon Master and trigger the Skinburster's Force Conduit.
