How to Get Reaper's Embrace in Baldur's Gate 3

Baldurs Gate 3 Ketheric Thorm Moonrise Towers Phase One

In Baldur's Gate 3, Reaper's Embrace can be acquired by defeating Ketheric Thorm in combat, and then looting the item from his corpse. As Ketheric is the boss fight of Act 2, you will first need to complete Act 1 in entirety and all prior quests and side quests that take your interest in Act 2.

You will need to ensure that all of these quests and objectives are completed before progressing past the point of no return in the Gauntlet of Shar. This is because, following the Nightsong decision and potential Balthazar fight, you will automatically progress into this final stage of Act 2, needing to head to Moonrise Towers to team up with Jaheria and the Harpers (choice dependant), take down Z'rell and the cultists, and lastly, face Ketheric Thorm in combat on the rooftop.

Tips For Fighting Ketheric Thorm Baldur's Gate 3

The Ketheric Thorm boss battle can be quite a difficult combat to overcome for many. For this reason, knowing some helpful tips and tricks to help create an advantage for your party will come in handy.

  • If you chose to free the Nightsong, she will join you in combat. Be sure to maintain her through healing and utility Spells when possible, as she is one of the fiercest allies to have by your side for this combat, making things significantly easier - particularly in the first phase.
  • Make sure to read Ketheric's journal entries during your exploration of Act 2, as this will provide extra information that opens up the possibility to force Ketheric to kill himself during the later stages of the combat.
  • During phases 2-3, focus on the Mind Flayer opponent first, as they have abilities that can disrupt your play.
  • Bring a stash of potions and a strong utility healing party member, as you will be locked out of Long Rests during the entire boss fight.

Reaper's Embrace Perks & Value, Explained

Baldurs Gate 3 Ketheric Thorm

Reaper's Embrace Perks

  • 19 AC
  • Magical Plate: All incoming damage is reduced by 2.
  • Reaper's Rigidity: When activated, you can't be moved against your will by any Spell or Action, but have Disadvantage on Dexterity Saving Throws.
  • Cantrip - How of the Dead: Let out a bone-chilling howl that Numbs all nearby creatures.
  • Numb: Movement speed halved. The spellcaster has Advantage on Attack Rolls against the affected entity. Removed by Help, or when hit by the spellcaster.

Not only does the Numb effect enable you to gain Advantage on all nearby enemies within range, but this effect lasts on all affected targets for 3 turns. This enables you to focus fire specific targets to ensure you dish out consistent damage, which is a huge boost to combat. In addition to this, the Reaper's Rigidity perk enables you to become unmovable by any Spell or Action, enabling your character to play very aggressively.

This effect works brilliantly with strong melee classes, not only because they will be able to make the most out of the Reaper's Rigidity bonus, but also because they can consistently grant themselves Advantage on their melee attacks with Numb. As most melee-range combatant Classes have multiple attacks per Action, as well as Bonus Action attacks, gaining Advantage will enable them to deal a significant amount of damage per turn. Alternatively, this may also be a solid option for some Cleric builds, as it will make a helpful addition to their AC, ensuring more survivability in combat.

Lastly, these Classes tend to come equipped with Heavy Armor Proficiency, meaning they will be able to gain the most out of it while equipped without the support of Feats. Some of the best choices to consider for Reaper's Embrace are as follows:

  • Paladin
  • Fighter
  • Cleric (Life Domain, Tempest Domain, Nature Domain, War Domain)
  • Ranger Knight
