Highlights

  • Larian Studios has done an exceptional job in accurately depicting the appearance, temperament, and behavior of house cats in Baldur's Gate 3, of course with a fantasy twist.
  • Cats in the game are regal and dignified, despite their small and cute appearance. They can be found in various locations and are pampered by the locals.
  • Using the Speak to Animals spell allows players to interact with the cats, gaining insights and gossip or simply complimenting them in their own language.

Baldur's Gate 3 launched on PC to critical success with some of the highest scores ever given a game across major review sites. Credit was given to its incredible characters, rich story, and world, and the sheer amount of freedom given to the player. Set in the world of Dungeons and Dragons, Baldur's Gate 3 draws its spells directly from the tabletop game, which includes Speak to Animals, a spell that may appear to be frivolous on the surface, but creates an entirely new experience on the Sword Coast. Animals of all kinds populate the area, though none are as regal as the house cat.

Larian Studios nailed their depictions of house cats through their appearance, temperament, and behavior. As any cat owner would know, cats are regal and proud creatures, and the ones in Baldur's Gate 3 are no different. All too dignified for how small and cute they are, they populate the streets of Baldur's Gate and small settlements where they're guaranteed a place to be pampered. Using Speak to Animals allows the player character to interact with the cats on their level, gleaning insight, gossip, or simply the privilege of complimenting the cats in their language.

The Cats Found Across The Storm Coast in Baldur's Gate 3

Malta-the-Cat-baldurs-gate-3
  • Malta: Malta is a fluffy cat with pale ginger fur. He's enigmatic as cats go, and his dialogue is like that of a detective on the beat, narrating his story as it unfolds before him. He offers the player character the chance to partner up, but his conditions for doing so are vague and are impossible to meet: either the player is too trusting, or too suspicious.
Kira-the-Cat-baldurs-gate-3
  • Kira the Cat: Top-tier gossip can be discussed with Kira the Cat who resides at Sharess' Caress. Kira is a fluffy brown cat with brilliant blue eyes and holds herself with a regal elegance befitting of a lady. The player character is lucky enough to bestow compliments upon her, and she provides insight into the clientele of the brothel in return.
Myshka-the-Cat-baldurs-gate-3
  • Myshka: It can be assumed that Myshka is a foreigner to the Sword Coast as, even with Speak to Animals, he speaks in a different language. A die roll shows that his mews translate to him asking if the player character is his mother. A positive response results in the beautiful white cat following the player character for a time.

Cats Found Outside the City of Baldur's Gate

  • Hiss Majesty: One of the few Sphynx cats in Baldur's Gate 3, Hiss Majesty can be found at the Last Light Inn. It's unknown how he arrived at the Inn, though he says he "slinked". Hiss Majesty does not enjoy being disturbed, though he does allow the player character to gaze upon his grace for a time before he loses patience and shoos them away.
Steelclaw-the-Cat-baldurs-gate-3
  • Steelclaw: Another Sphynx, Steelclaw's nerves are as sharp as her claws. She hunts illithid tadpoles and, in typical cat behavior, plays with her prey before delivering the final blow. Much to her disgust, those she deems "unworthy" insist on calling her "Fluffers".
Grub_cat_Baldurs_Gate_3-1
  • Grub: With fluffy fur a deep orange and a timid personality, Grub is one of the cutest cats in Baldur's Gate 3 and shows up with Yenna in Act 3. While some work is needed to make it happen, it is possible to have Grub and Yenna join the camp, even if only for a short time.

  • Tara: As a tressym, Tara isn't strictly a cat but is cute and elegant enough to be counted as one. Her calico pattern matches the wisdom and grace she displays, even while eating the birds of Baldur's Gate.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently available on PC and is slated for a September 6 release for PlayStation 5.
