Once Baldur's Gate 3 players have uncovered the entrance to the Wyrmway – the lair of Baldur's Gate's secret weapon, the dragon Ansur – they are presented with a series of challenges to prove their heroism. The four wings each test the aspects of Insight, Courage, Strategy, and Justice in the aspirant.

One of these tests is the Chamber of Courage, which challenges players to survive increasingly difficult waves of enemies. It's not one of the most difficult puzzles in Baldur's Gate 3, but it is difficult to survive without the right preparation and a strategy that avoids direct combat.

How To Survive The Chamber of Courage

Keep A Healer In The Party With Sanctuary, And Give Potions To Everyone

The best, most easily accessible spell for endurance encounters like the Chamber of Courage is to use Sanctuary on as many companions as possible, before the fight if possible. This spell uniquely prevents the target from receiving any damage until they attack or harm an enemy. It's a Level 1 spell in the Abjuration school, specifically available to Clerics early in the game.

It doesn't prevent damage from AoE attacks, but it's a huge boost to survivability nonetheless. Having a dedicated Healer in the party is crucial to recovering from enemy attacks if Sanctuary isn't available. Life Domain Clerics have the Preserve Life Channel Divinity feature, but Mass Healing Word and similar AoE heals can be just as effective.

Give every character a handful of powerful Healing potions, too. The fight goes on for a few rounds, and if the Healer runs out of Spell Slots trying to keep everyone alive, throwing a Healing potion at an ailing ally can do the trick – but the potion has to be in the thrower's inventory.

Use Summons – Mage Hand, Elementals, Animal Companions, Etc

One of the best ways to increase survivability in Baldur's Gate 3 combat is to create as many summons as possible. The summons don't even have to be strong because they're not here to kill enemies, just distract them.

If each companion in the party summons one additional party member, enemies have two times the number of targets to choose from on their turn. Take some time just before initiating the Chamber of Courage challenge to summon some distractions as they will persist into turn-based combat, giving each companion a standard action on their first turn.

Choose CC Over Direct Damage, Especially Banish/Domination Spells

The goal of the Chamber of Courage is not to defeat all the enemies that spawn, it's just to survive all five rounds. But new enemies spawn every round, replacing those that are defeated, and players can't guarantee their survival by killing them all off. As such, unless a character can confidently dispatch an enemy within a single turn, there's little reason to not use a Crowd Control or other special ability instead.

The best CC for this fight come in the form of Hold Monster, Banish, and Silence. Hold Monster will keep enemies in place, unable to take actions, while Banish sends them to another plane of existence for two turns, temporarily keeping them out of the picture entirely. Silence, though, is the most useful skill players can easily access for this fight.

All of the enemies that spawn are elemental, and some of their most powerful skills are spells. The Silence spell creates a huge sphere around a point, preventing enemies and allies alike from using spells within its area. Cast this on the edges of the Chamber of Courage, where enemies spawn in, to prevent them from casting spells at the party as soon as they arrive.

Consider Using A Globe of Invulnerability Scroll

The Globe of Invulnerability spell is a Level 6 spell only available to Wizards and Sorcerers, but players can also rarely find Scrolls of this powerful spell out in the world and from vendors. Head to Sorcerous Sundries to buy a Globe of Invulnerability scroll – it won't be cheap – and bring it along to the Wyrmway if the party lacks a Wizard to teach it to.

The Globe of Invulnerability will remain for only three turns, but that's more than half the total rounds players must survive. Take the first two rounds easy and set up your party optimally, then cast the Globe of Invulnerability on the third round to guarantee survival to the end of the challenge.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available for PC and PlayStation 5. A version for Xbox Series X/S is currently in development.
