Baldur's Gate 3, the hit RPG by Larian Studios, is set in a faithful recreation of the Forgotten Realms Dungeons & Dragons setting. One of the most iconic D&D locations that players will get to explore in Act 1 of Baldur's Gate 3 is the Underdark, home to Drow, Duergar, Deep Gnomes, and all manner of ancient secrets.

While they're exploring this subterranean realm, players may come across three interesting items, the Icy Crystal, Icy Helve, and Icy Metal. Although these items are easy to overlook, each is found in the possession of a Drow, who was looking for the Adamantine Forge, and each has an item description that hints that it can be combined with the others.

Of all the skills in Baldur's Gate 3, which proficiencies will serve the player character best?

Updated on January 30, 2024, by Nahda Nabiilah: Some quests in Baldur’s Gate 3 don’t have a marker on them, which means players are all on their own trying to figure out what the next step is and which necessary materials need to be collected. While roaming the Shadow-Cursed lands, you have a chance to stumble upon three characters and each one of them possesses Icy items in their inventory. Combining said items will reward you with a powerful and rare weapon in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How to Find Icy Crystal, Icy Helve, and Icy Metal in Baldur's Gate 3

BG3 Underdark Icy Parts locations

There are so many forgotten corners to delve in Baldur's Gate 3 that players may easily miss one or even all of the Icy items as they explore the Underdark. Because they're not marked as quest items and there's no quest to assemble them, they're also very easy to overlook. For players who are missing part of the set, here's where all three items can be found:

  • The Icy Helve
    • Found in the possession of the Drow Dhourn, one of the petrified victims of the Spectator to the west of the Selunite Outpost. If players manage to avoid killing Dhourn, they must immediately pick-pocket the Crystal from him as he will leave the area permanently afterward.
  • The Icy Crystal
    • Found in the possession of the Drow Filro, the Forgotten near the Sussur Tree. Filro is insane and will attack players on sight alongside his pet Hook Horrors.
  • The Icy Metal
    • Found beside the body of the dead Drow in the Myconid's treasure grove, which can be accessed by completing Sovereign Spaw's quest in Baldur's Gate 3 to kill the nearby Duergar slavers.

How to Craft Mourning Frost in Baldur's Gate 3

BG3 combining the Icy parts into Mourning Frost

Once players have got their hands on all three of the Icy items, all they need to do is combine them to craft the Mourning Frost Quarterstaff, a Very Rare magical item.To do this, simply right-click on any of the three items and select Combine, then drag the other two items into the remaining slots.

Mourning Frost is a powerful magical staff with several useful properties, particularly for spellcasters that specialize in Cold damage. As well as a +1 bonus to all Cold damage rolls made by the wielder, Mourning Frost also gives all the wielder's Cold spells a chance to inflict the Chilled condition. Chilled makes the target resistant to Fire but vulnerable to Cold damage, doubling any Cold damage they take for the next two turns. Finally, Mourning Frost also grants access to the Ray of Frost cantrip, and has a basic +1 enhancement to physical attack rolls.
