Player choice is key in Baldur's Gate 3 but even when players try to be good or evil, they'll sometimes unwittingly assist the other side without a complete overview of the information. An injured Tiefling with one horn named Karlach rests by a river and she claims cultists are seeking to send her back to the literal hell she escaped from.

The "cultists" turn out to be the Pladains of Tyr, led by Anders. They admit to hunting an escapee from Avernus but they mention that Karlach has murdered a family. Baldur's Gate 3 doesn't make the truth easy to grasp so players have to do some sleuthing to find out who is telling the truth.

This article divulges consequences within the game and reveals information the player's character may not know. Gamers committed to role-playing may wish to stop reading and find these things out for themselves.

Should You Side With Karlach Or Anders?

  • Good and neutral-aligned players should side with Karlach
  • Evil-aligned players should side with Anders

The Paladins of Tyr are actual servants of the archdemon Zariel. Players who cast Speak With Dead (switch party members to somebody who has the spell) will find this information out from the dead. When confronted, Anders will even admit this lie but still try to persuade the player to help them anyhow.

Karlach is something of an unknown but she's at least honest about being an escapee from Avernus and she clearly wants to avoid being captured and going back there. Most players will find that her plight is justified and help her deal with the cultists. However, talk it over when playing with friends and see what they want to do. Gamers doing an evil campaign will be delighted to help out an archdevil and kill an innocent Tiefling.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available in Early Access on PC and will be available on August 3rd, 2023. The PlayStation 5 version will be available on September 6th, 2023. A version for Xbox Series X/S is still in development.
