Sometimes even good intentions go badly in Baldur's Gate 3. Players who have infiltrated the Absolute's guide party will find themselves ambushed by the Harpers. The Harpers are a (mostly) good-aligned group and they're fighting on the right side.

Unfortunately, their attack timing couldn't be worse. They don't know that the player character is secretly undercover in the group and using Kar'niss, the drider, to get in close. At this moment, gamers have to choose to either fight back and keep up appearances or betray the guide and lose the way to the Absolute. Baldur's Gate 3 has consequences for making either choice.

This article divulges consequences within the game and reveals information the player's character may not know. Gamers committed to role-playing may wish to stop reading and find these things out for themselves.

Siding With The Harpers Or The Guide

Baldur's Gate 3 Harpers Or Guide Choice
  • Good-aligned characters should side with the Harpers and attack the guide group
    • This will keep players in friendly standing with the occupants of the Last Light Inn
  • Evil-aligned characters should side with the guide group and attack the Harpers
    • This will get players to the close of Act Two the quickest

Fights against either the harpers or the guide party are fairly easy to win, even without an optimized party composition. Kar'niss has a decent health pool but he's hardly a boss, maybe a mini-boss at best. The Harpers don't even have anybody of equivalent talent going for them. If players side with the guide group, keeping the Harpers alive is a challenge.

The ramifications of either choice are strong. There is the obvious morality of killing a bunch of good guys that will influence most players and their runs. On a practical level, being an enemy of the Harpers will allow players to level up fast by wiping out the inhabitants of the Last Light Inn. However, this will disable a healthy chunk of quests. Evil characters won't mind, but good-aligned players should always take the Harpers' side at this stage.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available now for PC. The PlayStation 5 version will be available on September 6th, 2023. A version for Xbox Series X/S is still in development.
