After shooting down a pack of Gnolls along the road in Baldur's Gate 3, players will get a chance to meet with Olly and Rugan, two Zhent employees that are in charge of delivering a chest to the Zhentarim Hideout. Players can offer to make the delivery in their stead.

Alternatively, Baldur's Gate 3 offers a chance for players to loot the Caravan Strongbox. The fallout from either decision is pretty significant but isn't immediately graspable, especially for players who haven't yet been to the hideout and don't know who the Zhentarim are.

Baldur's Gate 3: Should You Open The Traveler's Chest In The Creche?

Players exploring the Creche in Baldur's Gate 3 will come across children gathered around a Traveler's Chest and a mystery object inside.

Updated on April 29, 2024, by Nahda Nabiilah: While exploring and uncovering secrets in the world of Baldur's Gate 3, you will be forced to choose between multiple choices and the results will help shape your journey for better or for worse. After fighting a horde of Gnolls either by yourself or by using Illithid powers to turn one of them against the pack, players will meet Rugan, a Zhentarim employee trying to deliver some 'goods' to Baldur's Gate.

This article divulges consequences within the game and reveals information the player's character may not know. Players committed to role-playing may wish to stop reading and find these things out for themselves.

Opening The Chest In Baldur's Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3 Opening The Caravan Strongbox
  • Rugan, Olly, and all Zhentarim characters will become unfriendly or hostile.
  • Certain quests related to the Zhentarim will be automatically failed or never given.
  • The Caravan Chest contains gold and the Iron Flask.
  • Opening the Iron Flask initiates a boss fight with a Beholder called Spectator.

Note that if players open the chest at all, even if they leave the contents intact, this will count as opening the chest. When playing with friends, make sure everyone knows the consequences of opening the chest. There is a very cool boss fight when players open the Iron Flask inside.

While this is bad news for Rugan and Olly, the Zhent is the in-game equivalent of the mafia, so helping them out is dubious as far as alignment goes. Players may still want to turn this chest in, but good-aligned characters will have to wrestle with helping the Zhent. Switch party members to somebody good at picking locks if this is what the team wants.

Delivering The Chest In Baldur's Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3 Reading Rugan's Mind With The Chest
  • Opens up quest options for the Zhentarim if delivered there.
  • Rugan is tortured and Olly is killed if players deliver the chest to Baldur's Gate.

There are two delivery options that have wildly different outcomes. Delivering it to Baldur's Gate and splitting the money with the Zhent agents will make Rugan and Olly happy, but close off the Zhent plotlines, similar to opening the chest.

Delivering it to the correct location in Baldur's Gate 3 will open up further quest opportunities and rewards, but does entail working for a very shady organization. Non-evil characters may still want to do this, since Rugan and Olly are pretty low on the command chain and hurting them doesn't solve much.
