10 Our Fiery Friend

Acts 1-3, Several Hours

Karlach, Baldur's Gate 3's resident bombastic barbarian is literally on fire, and her companion quest revolves around the dangerous Infernal Engine that serves as her heart. Karlach's story is an engaging one of betrayal, loss, longing, and the necessity of living for the moment.

Some notable activities include:

  • Searching for a smith and a suitable material to fix Karlach's heart
  • Finding a way for Karlach to get revenge

"Our Fiery Friend" takes until Act 3 to be resolved and comes with several choices for Karlach and the player to make. It's nicely entwined with Wyll's companion quest, offering a deeper look at the relationship between these two characters.

9 The Wizard Of Waterdeep

Handsome and ambitious wizard Gale Dekarios gets a quest that spans the length of the game, as with the other Origin characters. Gale's story is one of overreaching and divine punishment as a former Chosen of Mystra, and players can choose throughout the game to help him with his problems.

Some notable activities include:

  • Breaking into a fortified and enchanted wizard's vault to steal secret books

Gale's story is well integrated into the main quest, although not nearly as much as characters like Astarion or Shadowheart. But Gale's questline comes with a magical bomb he's supposed to use against the Absolute - at the cost of his own life - in a bid for redemption. True to form, developer Larian gave players a range of options for dealing with the Wizard of Waterdeep's myriad problems in a quest that spans the length of the game.

8 Solve The Open Hand Temple Murders

Solving the Open Hand Temple murders is a task that spans nearly the whole of Act 3. "Solve the Open Hand Temple Murders" ties in directly to the main story quest and takes players through a wide variety of locations during Act 3, offering the chance for players of any alignment and persuasion to find allies to destroy the Absolute.

Some notable activities during this quest:

  • Speaking with dead men and searching for evidence of crimes
  • Investigating a hidden murder cult

In true Larian style, there are numerous opportunities to make far-reaching choices during this quest, making it fun to play and giving it great replayability thanks to its different outcomes.

7 Find A Cure

All Of Act 1, Easily 10+ Hours

The first part of the main quest, "Find a Cure" covers the entirety of Act 1 of the game. "Find a Cure" is a long, branching quest spanning a wide range of locales, from the Druid enclave of the Emerald Grove to the Goblin Camp and even the Underdark. This quest is a great introduction to Baldur's Gate 3 and gives players a pressing reason to engage with the game's various quests and factions.

Some notable activities:

  • Infiltrating a goblin stronghold to find the Druid Halsin
  • Visiting a mysterious teahouse and investigating its owner, Auntie Ethel

It serves as a fantastic way to introduce players to some characters who are present in later Acts too, and contains some brilliant story hooks that are important for the rest of the game. It's also one of the longest and most involved quests that players will find.

6 Find The Nightsong

"Find the Nightsong" begins in Act 1 and doesn't resolve until Act 3, meaning it spans all three Acts of the game. But this quest has a lot of different parts, each one coming with a good bit of exploration and combat. The Gauntlet of Shar is a massive sequence with a lot of different kinds of gameplay.

"Find the Nightsong" has a lot of choices to make during the quest, with different outcomes and vastly different effects on the game world depending on what exactly the player chooses. 5 The Blade Of Frontiers

Predicated upon his deal with a literal devil, Wyll has to navigate the consequences of his Pact with Mizora while attempting to stay true to his ideals. The Blade of Frontiers is a quest with a lot of different parts and even some involvement in other quests in the game.

Wyll is a powerful character that can be an amazing companion throughout BG3.

  • Rescuing a devilish contact from Moonrise Towers, seeking the aid of a legendary dragon, and infiltrating a prison

The Blade of Frontiers has several outcomes that players can help guide Wyll towards, or if they want, Wyll can make his own choices. This is an interesting quest with a good bit of variety in terms of encounters, choices, and locations.

4 The Githyanki Warrior

Abrasive and rude at the beginning of the game, Githyanki Warrior Lae'zel has a long questline that meshes very nicely with the game's main story and plot. One of the first NPCs encountered by the player, if recruited, Lae'zel has a major presence throughout Baldur's Gate 3.

Lae'zel's quest is a big part of Act 1, and although it isn't quite as present in Act 2, it comes back in a major way during Act 3. This quest comes with some major choices and has a big impact on the ending of the game, and on Lae'zel as a character.

3 The Urge

A little different from other quests, The Urge is a quest that can only be undertaken by players who choose The Dark Urge Origin for their character. This is a quest that spans the whole game and has some vastly different choices to make during it compared with any other Origin character or a custom character.

  • Finding out your origins, fighting the Urge (or giving into it), claiming your rightful place in the world (or rejecting it)

The Urge quest has some major story ramifications, making it an intriguing option for players who want something different from a playthrough of Baldur's Gate 3.

2 The Pale Elf

Vampire spawn High Elf Astarion is a popular character in Baldur's Gate 3 thanks to his charm, wit, and excellent voice acting. His story arc spans the entire length of the game, with many small and large story beats that take place during every Act.

  • Being fed upon by a vampire, investigating rumors of a vampiric ritual, infiltrating the mansion of Cazador Szarr

Of course, players can choose not to recruit Astarion at all or even to ignore his quest, but it comes up multiple times during the main story of Baldur's Gate 3 and it's a long one with many different options along the way.

Shadowheart's companion quest spans the entirety of Baldur's Gate 3 and is one of the most taxing quests in the game. This quest has a lot of layers and a lot of sub-quests, touching on many, many parts of the game, including several other quests that are massive in their own right.

Shadowheart's journey can have two vastly different outcomes, each with a major effect on the game world and the characters moving forward. It's a fitting pay-off for such a long and involved questline.
