If players decide to work with the Harpers and the druids in Baldur's Gate 3, they'll find a sleeping man named Art Cullagh in the Last Light Inn. Art is a former Flaming Fist mercenary who apparently wandered out of the Shadowfell recently, but a century spent in the darkness has left him insensible.

Spells and potions have no effect on Cullagh's condition, but fortunately there's a way to restore his senses. First, however, players should head to their Baldur's Gate 3 camp and speak to Halsin.

Updated October 27th, 2023: Players who make it to Last Light Inn in Baldur's Gate 3 will eventually come across a man who is sick in bed. Although it seems like a pretty straightforward case at first, players will soon find out that Art Cullagh is suffering from something unseen. It can actually be a bit tricky to wake Art Cullagh up in BG3. To better help players with how to wake up Art Cullagh in Baldur's Gate 3, the following guide has been updated with a video.

Halsin's Information

Baldurs Gate 3 Cullagh Halsin

If players sided with the refugees and druids in Act 1, Halsin should be waiting in the campsite. He wants to help restore the Shadow-Cursed Lands back to their natural beauty, and Art Cullagh turns out to be exactly the break he's been waiting for.

When players try to speak to Cullagh, he mentions a name: Thaniel. Halsin recognizes it as the name of the land spirit, and he'll leave camp to visit the Last Light Inn immediately. Players can then leave camp to find Halsin already at Cullagh's bedside. Halsin will suggest finding a trigger that can bring the man back to the present, but he has no idea what to look for or where.

Fortunately, players should already have a clue regarding where to look. Fist J'ehlar, Cullagh's caretaker, gives the party his last order after speaking to them, and this order tells Cullagh to investigate the House of Healing. The House of Healing is on the north end of the western side of the map, so be sure to get either a Moonlantern or a Pixie Blessing before continuing this quest.

How to Deal with Malus Thorm

Baldurs Gate 3 Thorm Malus

The House of Healing is the domain of Malus Thorm, one of the Thorm siblings corrupted by the darkness. When players find him, he's in the operating theater giving a very Sharran lecture to the "Sisters." Malus will want to experiment on the party members next, and this leads into a boss fight if players refuse outright. However, players can also talk their way out of a confrontation.

Baldurs Gate 3 House of Healing Map

The operating theater is a large octagonal room that players can see on the map. Just north of the theater is a smaller room with a locked door on either side. Players can pick these doors open, or they can blast them down with attacks that deal at least 10 damage. Inside this room is a book: Surgery and Physiology: A Sharran's Primer. Read it to get the best possible chance to deal with Malus without combat.

Walking up to Malus Thorm will start a conversation. Assuming players don't attack immediately, they'll get to make an Investigation, Religion, or Persuasion check to convince Malus not to start dissecting the party immediately. After that, players face another check to suggest either for the Sisters to practice on each other, or even practice on Malus himself. By reading Malus's book first, players will lower the DC for the "practice on Malus" check from 21 to 18 and get a new Intimidation check.

Succeeding on these social rolls will end Malus Thorm's unlife immediately. Failing either check will start a fight against Malus and four Sisters. Malus has 276 hit points, and he starts multiattacking once he reaches 110.

However it goes, players will find several useful items on Malus's body, including a Battered Lute. Bring this lute to Cullagh and play a few notes to wake him up. At this point, Cullagh will ask to see Halsim if he isn't present already. The quest to restore the Shadow-Cursed Lands continues after this, but the quest "Wake up Art Cullagh" ends when he awakens.
