Cloudkill is a high-level spell in Baldur's Gate 3 that gradually drains characters' health. Although players encounter it not that often, it is still very annoying and there are few methods to get rid of it. It doesn't matter if it's a trap or if players have applied Cloudkill themselves, in any case, allies will gradually suffer damage.

Fortunately, Baldur’s Gate 3 offers several good ways to deal with Cloudkill. Players can use special spells or take a closer look at the game environment as it can be useful. Here's what players can do if they encounter Cloudkill.

Disable Cloudkill by Using Spells

BG3: Nightsong

The most effective way to neutralize the effect of a spell is, of course, another spell. There are three different spells that players can use to get rid of Cloudkill:

  • Gust of Wind is a great way to dispel toxic fumes and push enemies away at the same time. To use it, players must have a Wizard, Sorcerer, Druid, or a Cleric with the Tempest Domain subclass in their party.
  • Fog Cloud can remove Cloudkill and prevent it from being cast. This spell can be learned by Wizards, Sorcerers, Druids, Rangers, and such subclasses as Tempest Domain (Cleric), Arcane Trickster (Rogue), and Eldritch Knight (Fighter).
  • Darkness, like Fog Cloud, can neutralize Cloudkill and prevent it from being cast. This spell can be used by Warlocks, Sorcerers, and Wizards. Subclasses that gain access to this spell include the Arcane Trickster (Rogue), Eldritch Knight (Fighter), and Oathbreaker (Paladin). Certain races have access to it as well; specifically, the Asmodeus Tiefling, Drow, and Drow Half-Elf races.

Remove Cloudkill by Covering Vents

BG3: character

If for some reason, players cannot use these spells, there are other methods. If Cloudkill is the result of a trap, the vents can be closed to stop the spell effect. To find them, players can use fire as it will dispel the smoke for a while, or sometimes they can pass a Perception check. Then the vents can simply be covered with an object.

Wait Until the Smoke Disappears

BG3: Shadowheart

Although this method may seem a bit strange, it works in the end. Players can simply move to a safe distance and wait for the smoke to disappear. It may take a little bit of time, but it's the best way to go if there are no other options.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available now on PC and PS5, with an Xbox Series X version also in development.
