Non-lethal damage is a type of attack in Baldur's Gate 3 that causes the target to lose consciousness instead of dying. This guide provides detailed information on how to deal non-lethal damage in Baldur's Gate 3.

Players who wish to spare their enemies' lives may opt for non-lethal attacks, particularly if they are playing the role of a good character. Once players know how to perform non-lethal attacks, they can avoid conflicts and often resolve disputes peacefully.

How to Deal Non-Lethal Damage

BG3: Non-Lethal Damage

To perform a non-lethal attack, you need to enable it using the hotbar. Follow the steps below:

  • While in the game, go to the Passives tab. You can find it at the bottom of the screen in the Hotbar.
  • Now, you will see the Toggle Non-Lethal Attacks icon in the menu.
  • Click on it to activate non-lethal attacks.

To use a non-lethal attack, walk up to the NPC you want to knock out and hit them. Note that these attacks are not an ability. Once you activate a non-lethal attack, each character on the team will only deal nonlethal damage. A white outline around a character means that non-lethal attacks are enabled. To turn off non-lethal damage, click the same icon in the Hotbar to remove the white outline.

When to Use Non-Lethal Damage

BG3: the character

Non-lethal damage can only be dealt with melee weapons, such as swords, daggers, sabers, and maces. Potions, spells, arrows, and any ranged attacks will automatically deal lethal damage, even if you have non-lethal damage enabled. But this can be useful, and we'll explain why below.

Imagine you are fighting a strong enemy who has a lot of health, and you don't want to kill them. You can use ranged attacks such as potions or arrows to significantly reduce their HP bar. Take turns hitting the enemy until their health is close to a critical minimum. Then use a non-lethal melee attack to knock them out.
