One of the best parts of Baldur's Gate 3 is sharing the experience with a group of friends. True to the Dungeons and Dragons experience, friends can get together on a day and time of their choosing, party up, and complete the various quests and dungeons together.

But companions are also a huge fun factor in Baldur's Gate 3. Playing solo with companions will fill the game with unique dialogues and even hidden quests. With such intrigue with either human or companion party members, it's understandable to want as big of a party as possible.

Maximum Party Size

Baldur's Gate 3 Wyll And Karlach As The Demon Returns
  • There can be no more than four players (including the main character) in an active party.
  • There are six permanent companions and four temporary companions available.
  • Players can additionally hire up to three hirelings in addition to the companions.
  • Summoned units and recruits increase the combatants but not the party size.

As of this writing, there is a hard cap of four total party members that can be in an active party at once. This may seem unfortunate but the encounters have been balanced in such a way that having more than this number would trivialize combat. That said, there are still many party members to switch between.

Aside from the standard companions, players can also recruit new party members through hirelings. If players dismiss all of their companions back to camp, they can have three hirelings. Just be warned that these party members will need to be re-hired once dismissed.

The very slight exception to this limit is in the form of summoned units. There is a soft cap at one per party member but there are a few ways to get around this. For example, having Glut come along when entering the Underdark will allow both Glut and a summoned unit to belong to one party member.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available now for PC. The PlayStation 5 version will be available on September 6th, 2023. A version for Xbox Series X/S is still in development.
