The situation with Edowin in Baldur's Gate 3 is immediately tenuous and it can get much, much worse if players don't handle it correctly. Unfortunately, critical pieces of information are not evident to the characters involved and some very innocent mistakes can lead to the deaths of all the NPCs nearby.

Baldur's Gate 3: Where To Go First

Baldur's Gate 3 starting locations can be a bit confusing, but this guide will set players on the right track towards the rest of the story.

There is no perfectly happy situation for what's occurred with Edowin in Baldur's Gate 3 but there is a way to minimize the damage and save potentially dozens of lives. The character's party is in danger, too, so be careful with the dialogue choices and skill checks.

Updated November 8th, 2023: Dealing with Edowin in Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the first major decisions that players will face. The NPC and his group can be found rather close to the start of the game during the first act and players will likely stumble across Edowin in BG3 by simply doing a bit of exploring. Unfortunately, it's easy for players to make his situation quite a bit worse if they choose the wrong prompts or fail the wrong rolls. To better help players in how to help Edowin in Baldur's Gate 3, the following guide has been updated.

This article divulges consequences within the game and reveals information the player's character may not know. Gamers that are committed to role-playing may wish to stop reading and find these things out for themselves.

Saving Edowin's Friends

  • Choose the "Forget the owlbear. You're still alive - so go." option when prompted.

Unfortunately, Edowin cannot be saved and he will succumb to his wounds even with a perfect Medicine check. He can be "helped" but not until later. For not, his friends are in danger of the owlbear and of the Mind Flayer parasite living inside of Edowin. If players let slip they came from the ship that crashed, Brynna and Andrick give their lives and die in combat with the player.

Combat conditions in Baldur's Gate 3 are typically negative and applied by a combat ability, and there are a lot of these Status Effects in the game.

Brynna and Andrick also regard Edowin as a cult leader and are at risk of getting themselves killed if they think the character is betraying Edowin's quest to find survivors. Tell them to run off and give them a chance to reprogram. By this stage, players have already dealt with the Mind Flayer that infected them so the player understands the power this influence can have.

Avenging Edowin

Baldur's Gate 3 Parasite Leaves Edowin's Body
  1. Loot Edowin's body
  2. Choose the "Reach out and crush it." option twice when prompted.
  3. Choose either Insight or Strength to try and crush the creature.
  4. Choose either Insight, Constitution, or Strength to try and crush the creature.

This little creature will end up finding a new host and indoctrinating people again if it isn't crushed. This requires trying to crush the creature and then passing back-to-back checks. Either choose somebody with a high Insight or Strength to pass these checks.

When playing with friends, somebody should have one of these two skills. Edowin may still be dead from his injuries to the Owlbear but players who save his friends and crush the parasite save everything that he loved.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available in Early Access on PC and will be available on August 3rd, 2023. The PlayStation 5 version will be available on September 6th, 2023. A version for Xbox Series X/S is still in development.
