Baldur’s Gate 3 has proven to be a huge success as it masterfully adapts Dungeons & Dragons into a video game with endless possibilities when playing. The player in Baldur’s Gate 3 will meet and recruit many companions to fight alongside them. One possible companion often overlooked by players is none other than an intellect Devourer, referred to as US.

The Tiefling, a race descending from the devils of the Nine Hells, is a good option for new players in Baldur's Gate 3.

Here’s how the player can find and free Us to get him to fight alongside them, as the player could need his power during BG3’s prologue.

Where To Find Us in Baldur's Gate 3

US the brain in bg3

The player will be able to run into Us very early on in the game. The player will find Us on board the Nautiloid Ship.

While exploring the Nautiloid Ship, the player will hear someone calling them. The player should head up to the floor above them via the elevator. There, they will find a corpse named Myrnath with a weird brain poking out.

This brain is, in fact, an Intellect Devourer and will ask the player to free them.

How To Free Us

The player will have a few options upon talking to Us on how to proceed. They could choose to destroy the brain, which will kill US. The player can also choose to mutilate the brain, which could end up badly for them as Us will fight back if the player fails. The best solution is obviously to free US, as there are no setbacks and reasons not to.

To free US, the player can first go through an investigation roll, but it is not necessary. Then, the important part comes as the player will need to pass an ability check in either Strength, Medicine, or Dexterity, whichever the player is more confident in. If the player fails, they won’t be able to get US. It is recommended to save before attempting to free Us to be able to retry by loading an older save point.

When Us is freed, they will join the player as a companion. Us becomes an Intellect Devourer, a type of NPC the player will get to fight against on many occasions.

Is Us Useful?

The player will be able to get access to Us early on in the Nautiloid Ship. While it is still a prologue to the real game, the player will come face-to-face with some extremely challenging enemies. Having an extra character to use during combat can be game-changing.

Us is especially important to get if the player plans on fighting Commander Zhalk. Commander Zhalk is an extremely powerful enemy that the player would have no chance of defeating on their own. Even with Us as a companion, victory is still not guaranteed, but it does help.

Using US, the player has a better chance of defeating Zhalk and, in return, earning an extremely powerful sword that will carry the player through Act 1, the Everburn Blade. This blade adds 2d4 fire damage to the player’s attacks.

In addition, Us can move up to 9 meters, which is standard for most characters. Additionally, it can make use of Dark Vision.

Can You Keep Us?

Unfortunately for the player, US, the intellect devourer, is not a permanent companion. Indeed, it will only accompany the player from the moment they free him from the skull until the ship crashes.

Us can also die at any moment during the prologue if the player is not careful with it. However, it is unlikely it’ll die before the final battle as 11 hit points is quite a lot at this point in the game. With that, the player should bid farewell to Us.

Where To Find Us Later On

For players who grew attached to US, the intellect devourer, there is good news. While the player will be separated from Us for the majority of the game, there is a possibility of being reunited.

The player will be able to find Us yet again at the end of Act 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3. That is after fighting against Ketherin Throm. She will summon an Illithid tentacle that will open up the path to the Ilithid Colony from the Moonrise Tower.

Inside of the Illithid Colony, the player needs to head to the morgue, where Us will be found, locked up in a cage. The player can persuade Chop the Butcher to free Us, reuniting it with the player.

If the player does all this, they’ll have the possibility to summon Us during battles.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is now available to play on PC and PlayStation 5.
