There are many companions to get in Baldur's Gate 3. Here's how to get each one of them.

As one of the most popular options for players old and new, there are some things to keep in mind when customizing the player’s Elf character to best optimize it.

Overview

A Wood Elf Ranger in Baldur's Gate 3

The Elf race has two sub-races: The High Elf and the Wood Elf.

The elf race gets these features:

- Base racial speed, granting them 9-meter movement.

- Elven Weapon Training, giving them proficiency with the long sword, the short sword, the short bow, and the longbow.

- Dark vision, up to 12 meters of seeing in the dark

- Fey ancestry, Magic cannot cause the character to sleep, and they have an advantage on saving throws when it comes to being charmed.

Best High Elf Build

The High Elf’s perk is that they can pick a cantrip to use.

High Elf can work great as Warlocks as their Elven weapon training will let them make use of many weapons they otherwise could not.

The Warlock class gives them access to light armor.

The best sub-class to pick for them is the Archfey as they will be able to eventually get access to powerful abilities such as Misty Escape or Dominate Person.

When picking Warlock, players should invest in Wisdom and Charisma. The best background would be the Sage or Charlatan.

The best proficiency skills for the High Elf are Stealth and Sleight of Hand.

Best Wood Elf Build

The Wood Elf gets Fleet of Foot, which increases their movement by 1.5 meters, and Mask of the Wild, giving them stealth proficiency.

These features make the Wood Elf one of the best candidates for the Rogue class. The Rogue class makes great use of stealthy attacks.

The best subclass to pick would be the Thief, as it will give the player an extra bonus action. Thieves mostly rely on dexterity and intelligence. They can use simple weapons as well as hand crossbows, long swords, rapiers, short swords, and get light armor. Thanks to Elven Build, they’d also have access to the short bow and the long bow.

The best proficiency skills to have are deception, stealth, sleight of hand, and perception.

The best backgrounds for the Thief Wood Elf are Charlatan, Criminal, or Urchin.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is now available on PC and PlayStation 5.
