Wyll Ravenguard is a criminally underrated character in Baldur’s Gate 3. He’s often overshadowed by other fan favorites like Shadowheart or Astarion, but that’s no reason to leave the Blade of Frontiers in the dust. Wyll is brave, kindhearted, and sincere, no matter what the Hells throw at him. He’s a man who sticks to his convictions and will protect the innocent with his very life.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Should You Side With Wyll Or Karlach?

Should the player side with Karlach or side with Wyll and kill her in Baldur's Gate 3?

In fact, Wyll’s storyline proves that he’s selfless to a fault. He deserves so much better out of life, but he never lets that get him down. His dialogue is filled with unwavering faith in his companions, warm praise, and the wise words of his father, all delivered to perfection by his VA Theo Solomon. And he’s got more sass and humor than folks give him credit for.

1 "Provoke The Blade, And Suffer Its Sting."

Every Good Hero Needs A Catchphrase

Wyll 10

Wyll is the classic adventuring hero, and he makes that clear right from the get-go. As the player approaches the Emerald Grove, they’re suddenly pinned down by a troupe of goblins. As they prepare for battle, Wyll leaps over the wall to enter the fray.

There, he delivers a catchphrase he’s doubtlessly repeated countless times before. He even strikes a pose! It’s a moment that tells fans everything they need to know about the guy. A folk tale-style hero who’s earned a name for himself along the Sword Coast.

2 "The Devil Won't Just Take Anything. He'll Take Everything."

A Warning Based On First-Hand Experience

Wyll 1

Players encounter several fiendish individuals in Baldur’s Gate 3, including the charismatic and slimy Raphael. If asked, Wyll sternly warns the player against trusting devils of any kind, using a cautionary tale to prove his point. What he doesn’t mention is that he is a cautionary tale, being that he’s a warlock in a pact with the cambion Mizora.

Baldur's Gate 3: How to Break Wyll's Pact with Mizora

Wyll's warlock pact in Baldur's Gate 3 is unfair, but it's not unbreakable. Here is how players can end it.

While this may come off as hypocritical, Wyll’s lips were quite literally sealed at the time. Still, he’s adamant about preventing others from repeating his mistakes, however he can. No matter what the devil offers, the cost is never worth it.

3 "Mm - Lae'zel, Do You Believe In Love At First Sight?"

Someone Has A Crush, And It's Not On Tav

Wyll 4

Several of Wyll’s lines reveal he’s got an insta-crush on Lae’zel. Can’t fault him for lack of taste, but unfortunately for him, nothing really comes of it. Lae’zel’s just not the lovey-dovey type (at least, not initially). But as this one conversation shows, Wyll just might be happy to have something a bit more…physical.

It’s a great moment showing how companions may feel about each other. They’re not all just sitting around, waiting to see which one Tav will walk up to and romance. Whether players end up with Wyll or not by the end, he was still shooting his shot before he found the right one.

4 "You Don't Want A Devil At Your Party."

Even Heroes Have Their Off Days

Wyll 9

Wyll’s a pretty humble guy most of the time. He knows where his skills lie, but he’s not afraid of a little self-deprecating humor, either. He’s generally proud of the life he leads, even when his decision to spare Karlach earns him a demonic makeover.

But during the Tiefling party, players find Wyll hidden away from everyone else. He’s surprisingly gloomy, more than a little self-conscious about his new horns and glowing red eye. The moment is a gentle reminder that even the most self-assured person has their insecurities.

5 "Astarion, How Is The Rat Diet Going?"

How To Roast A Vampire, No Sunlight Required

Wyll 10

There’s plenty of banter between the career monster hunter and the party’s resident vampire. But this one remark is definitely the most cutting. Astarion tries to maintain a somewhat ethically-sourced diet, consisting mainly of animals and enemies, and Wyll just can’t help but tease him for it.

Some might say the joke was made in ill taste, considering that Astarion was actually forced onto an all-rat diet for most of his life. But then again, Astarion’s also never shied away from dishing out some pretty low blows to everyone else. In just five short words, Wyll gave him a taste of his own medicine.

6 "As My Father Once Told Me, 'Can We Get On With It?'"

Words To Live By

Wyll 5

If there’s one thing Wyll can’t stop talking about, it’s his dad. The guy worships his estranged father and tries with all his might to stay true to how he was raised. This leads to a lot of him quoting his dad’s words of wisdom.

So, it’s nice to hear Wyll poking fun at both his dad and himself in this little throwaway line that only occurs when players select his character icon over and over. It’s the closest Wyll ever gets to losing his patience or criticizing the Grand Duke.

7 "So Much Shadow Around Us. To Think I Almost Missed The Light."

Wyll Being The Sweetest And Sappiest Companion

Wyll 2

Gamers who don’t romance Wyll are missing out. Most companions are too wrapped up in their life problems to seek out true love. Some are more, “Bed first, feelings later.” Not Wyll. He’s a hopeless romantic looking to sweep someone off their feet.

Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Romance Wyll

Wyll is one of the player's companions. Here's how to romance this powerful Warlock in Baldur's Gate 3.

His intimate dance scene with the player character is so charming, it’s unreal. His romanced story arc is filled with poetic, cheesy speeches like this one. But what makes it work is that Wyll truly means every word of it. He’s a pure heart, ripe for the taking.

8 "I Taught Them To Fight, Not To Hate."

Tough On Monsters, But Nice To Kids

Wyll 7

As if Wyll wasn’t already the perfect man, turns out he’s great with kids, too. After defending the Grove, players speak to Wyll after he gives the Tiefling youngsters a lesson on self-defense. Shadowheart questions his gentle method, comparing it to her own “spare the hand, spoil the child” upbringing.

Wyll’s response is profound. Although he’s preparing these kids for a harsh world, he doesn’t want to be another reason why it’s harsh. He can teach them while still making them feel safe. It’s a great breakdown of why “tough love” isn’t always healthy.

9 "Fool Me Once, Shame On You. Fool Me Twice, And - Wait, How's It Go, Again?"

Wyll Can't See How Much He Deserves Better

Wyll 3

Wyll isn’t exactly naive, per se, but he is often willfully ignorant of how none of his good deeds go unpunished. Protect his home from cultists? He’s disowned by his father. Refuse to kill an innocent person? He’s turned into a devil.

He has every reason to complain, yet he never does. It would be admirable if it wasn’t slightly concerning. It might do him some good to look inward and wonder why he never stands up for himself, never puts himself first, and never demands more out of life. In all fairness, his dad doesn’t deserve half the praise Wyll gives him.

10 "But I Promise You, Every Thrust Of My Blade..."

Wyll Moves Ever Onward

Wyll and Mizora From BG3
  • "But I promise you, every thrust of my blade and every flame I sparked was for the good of the Coast."

This one line really sums up how Wyll perceives his warlock pact, and his life in general. To him, it truly doesn’t matter how much of himself he needs to sacrifice. If it will help innocent people, he’s all for it, no hesitation. Mizora can give him her worst; he hasn’t regretted his pact for an instant.

Therein lies the purity of Wyll Ravenguard. A man of the people who will do what’s right, no matter the cost. A hero who’s truly earned his notoriety without letting fame go to his head. The Blade of Frontiers is unbreakable and unwavering.
