Highlights

  • Warhammers in Baldur's Gate 3 can be used with one or two hands and require Martial Weapon Proficiency.
  • The best Warhammers come with unique skills like Backbreaker, Concussive Smash, and Weakening Strike.
  • Some notable Warhammers in the game include the Intransigent Warhammer, Clown Hammer, and Faithbreaker.

Warhammers are versatile melee weapons in Baldur's Gate 3, which means players can opt to wield them in one hand or two. Wielding with just one hand means players can also make use of the best shields in the game at the cost of losing some damage. They also require characters to have Martial Weapon Proficiency.

Baldur's Gate 3: The Best Melee Weapons, Ranked

Looking to deal some heavy damage the old-fashioned way in Baldur's Gate 3? These melee weapons will have your back.

These deadly weapons deal Bludgeoning damage, based on a character's Strength modifier, and while the best Warhammers in Baldur's Gate 3 have unique skills and effects, all come with at least three basic actions. These are Backbreaker, Concussive Smash, and Weakening Strike. The Backbreaker action in particular is rather strong as it can knock enemies prone, making them extremely vulnerable and limiting their offensive capabilities.

Updated March 13, 2024 by Joe Grantham: Baldur's Gate 3 is a huge game with a ton of depth, and understanding all the weapon types is no easy feat. As such, this list has been updated to more clearly detail the best warhammers in BG3, with all of their stats and weapon skills clearly listed. It is also important that players know where they can find these weapons, although given the strength of the absolute best, many are only available in Act 3 or the latter stages of Act 2.

10 Warhammer +1

  • 1d8 Bludgeoning +1 (One-Handed)
  • 1d10 Bludgeoning +1 (Two-Handed)

The Warhammer +1 is simply a magically enhanced version of the standard Warhammer, giving it 1 bonus damage, and a +1 to Attack Rolls, which means it is slightly more likely to hit enemies rather than missing and thus wasting a turn.

While it isn't a weapon players will want to hold onto for too long, with many objectively superior alternatives below, it is still a decent option early on. Players can purchase the Warhammer +1 from many of the merchants around the map while they are still at a low level.

9 Intransigent Warhammer

Two-Handed Damage: 1~10

Baldur's Gate 3 Intransigent Warhammer

Weapon Skills

  • 1d8 Bludgeoning (One-Handed)
  • 1d10 Bludgeoning (Two-Handed)

Uncommon

Impulse Blast: Knocks nearby creatures Prone after killing a target or landing a Critical Hit.

The Intransigent Warhammer is an interesting weapon as it has no more than the base damage of all warhammers. However, it does have a fantastic passive ability that provides lots of Crowd Control when killing targets or landing Critical Hits. In large fights with lots of enemies, this effect will come into use time and time again.

The weapon can be found inside a chest on a Duergar boat in Ebon Lake, while on the way to the Grymforge.

8 Clown Hammer

Two-Handed Damage: 3~12

Baldur's Gate 3 Clown Hammer (Warhammer)

Damage

Rarity

Weapon Skills

  • 1d8 + 2 Bludgeoning (One-Handed)
  • 1d10 + 2 Bludgeoning (Two-Handed)

Rare

  • Grim Irony: Whenever this weapon lands a critical hit, both the target and the attacker have to succeed a Wisdom Saving Throw, or be affected by fits of laughter.

Despite appearing to be a silly weapon, the Clown Hammer isn't too bad, although it certainly can backfire. With a Weapon Enchantment +2, it has surprisingly good damage and will successfully hit enemies more often than not. The interesting part, however, is the Grim Irony passive as it can instill fits of laughter in both the target and the attacker after scoring a crit. This will essentially render the character useless for a turn as they roll around on the floor laughing.

Finding hidden treasure can be a joy for Baldur's Gate 3 players, especially when they can discover piles of loot and powerful gear.

The Clown Hammer naturally belongs to a clown, and players can find Dribbles at the Circus of the Last Days right at the start of Act 3 in Rivington. Interestingly, if a player gets their face painted at the circus, they will become immune to the negative effects of this weapon, at least until it washes off.

7 Warhammer +2

  • 1d10 + 2 Bludgeoning (Two-Handed)

There isn't too much special about the Warhammer +2, which is an enchanted version of the basic warhammer with more damage and an additional +2 to Attack Rolls, which means players should hit more often. Nevertheless, these simple stats put it above a few other warhammers with weak effects and damage.

The Warhammer +2 can be looted from a member of the Flaming Fist, Gauntlet Edwynna, who is found at the South Span Checkpoint in Rivington during Act 3.

6 Faithbreaker

  • 1d10 + 1 Bludgeoning (Two-Handed)

Absolute Power: A surge of Divine energy accompanies the swing. It deals an additional 1d6 Force damage and possibly pushes the target back.

While the Faithbreaker is nothing special in terms of damage, with just a +1 Weapon Enchantment, it does have a fantastic Weapon Action, Absolute Power, which can be used once per Short Rest.

For a heavier offense, here's which two-handed weapons are the strongest in Baldur's Gate 3.

The Faithbreaker can be found in the Shattered Sanctum, where it is dropped by Dror Ragzlin. The fact that it can be found so early in the game, does give it an advantage over stronger warhammers that are often found in Act 3.

5 Dwarven Thrower

Two-Handed Damage: 3~12

Baldur's Gate 3 Best Classes For The Dwarf Race Collage

Damage

Rarity

Weapon Skills

  • 1d8 + 2 Bludgeoning (One-Handed)
  • 1d10 + 2 Bludgeoning (Two-Handed)

Very Rare

  • Homing Weapon: This weapon will return to its owner when Thrown.
  • Dwarven Thrower: A Dwarf throwing this warhammer deals an extra 1d8 Bludgeoning damage. If the target is a Large, Huge, or Gargantuan creature, the strike deals an additional 2d8 Bludgeoning damage instead.

In the hands of most characters, the Dwarven Thrower is an average warhammer, but as its name suggests, it is really meant for Dwarfs. In particular, Dwarven characters who are great at throwing, such as members of the Barbarian class, can take advantage of the major upsides of this weapon.

When throwing this warhammer against larger enemies, serious damage can be dealt with the bonus of having it return thanks to the Homing Weapon effect. The Dwarven Thrower can be purchased from the trader Ferg Drogher in Rivington.

4 Charge-Bound Warhammer

Two-Handed Damage: 2~11 or 4~18 For Eldritch Knights & Warlocks

Baldur's Gate 3 Warhammer +2

Damage

Rarity

Weapon Skills

  • 1d8 + 1 Bludgeoning (One-Handed)
  • 1d10 + 1 Bludgeoning (Two-Handed)

Rare

  • This hammer's magical powers only function if it's Bound to an Eldritch Knight or is a Warlock's Pact Weapon.
  • Favored Weapon: This weapon has a +1 bonus to damage and Attack Rolls.
  • Shocking Bound: This weapon deals an additional 1d6 Lightning damage.

The Charge-Bound Warhammer is one of the best warhammers in BG3, but only if players are a Warlock or an Eldritch Knight (a Fighter Subclass). This is because, for its magical effects to work, the weapon must be bound. If it is bound, players will deal up to 7 more damage on hits, which themselves are more likely with an additional bonus to Attack Rolls.

While Warlocks will acquire the weapon as part of their pact, Eldritch Knights must buy the Charge-Bound Warhammer from Dammon at the Last Light Inn. The fact that it can be found so early in Act 2 certainly raises the effectiveness of this versatile weapon.

3 Ketheric’s Warhammer

Two-Handed Damage: 3~15

Baldur's Gate 3 Ketheric’s Hammer

Damage

Rarity

Weapon Skills

  • 1d8 + 1 Bludgeoning + 1d4 Psychic (One-Handed)
  • 1d10 + 1 Bludgeoning + 1d4 Psychic (Two-Handed)

Rare

N/A

Ketheric's Warhammer is one of the best in the game thanks to the bonus Psychic damage that it inflicts. However, surprisingly for a weapon that belongs to one of the main villains of Baldur's Gate 3, it has no other special effects.

Players who fancy getting their hands on this weapon will have to wait until Act 3 when they can find it on Ketheric Thorm after Ketheric is defeated in the Mindflayer Colony.

2 Orphic Hammer

Two-Handed Damage: 4~13

Baldur's Gate 3 Orphic Hammer (Warhammer)

Damage

Rarity

Weapon Skills

  • 1d8 + 3 Bludgeoning (One-Handed)
  • 1d10 + 3 Bludgeoning (Two-Handed)

Legendary

  • Spell Resistance: The user has Advantage on Saving throws against spells.
  • Unshackling Strike: Smite the magical bonds keeping a creature Restrained, Paralyzed, and Stunned, freeing it.

While the Orphic Hammer is a Legendary weapon, it does fall short in comparison to other weapons of this rarity and isn't even the best warhammer in terms of damage. The Weapon Enchantment +3, however, is always going to be useful as it makes attacks more likely to hit, as well as providing more damage.

What players lack in damage with this weapon is made up for in resistance against spells. If players want to find this Legendary weapon, they will have to sign Raphael's Contract to get the hammer in exchange for the Crown controlling the Absolute. Alternatively, they can find it in the House of Hope and steal the hammer from Raphael.

1 Hammer Of The Just

Two-Handed Damage: 4~16

How to Defeat Sarevok Anchev in Baldur’s Gate 3

Weapon Skills

  • 1d8 + 2 Bludgeoning + 1d4 Radiant (One-Handed)
  • 1d10 + 2 Bludgeoning + 1d4 Radiant (Two-Handed)

Rare

  • Slay the Wicked: This weapon deals an additional 1d6 Bludgeoning damage against Fiends and Undead.
  • Detect Thoughts: The caster can focus their mind to read the thoughts of certain creatures while talking to them. Can cast the spell once, per Long Rest.

Despite being just a Rare weapon, the Hammer of the Just is arguably the best warhammer in BG3 thanks to its incredible damage. Furthermore, if players even find themselves in combat versus Fiends or the Undead, they will end up doing even more damage.

To find the Hammer of the Just and start slaying the wicked, players must first reach Act 3 of the game. If they can then locate the Stormshore Tabernacle in the Lower City, it can be found in the basement inside the Offerings to Tyr chest.
