Highlights

  • Players can change the class of their companions in Baldur's Gate 3 by giving 100 gold to Withers, allowing for interesting and unique gameplay choices.
  • Astarion, a rogue, can be transformed into a ranger with high dexterity and versatility in combat, making him an effective backline character.
  • Shadowheart, a cleric, can be turned into a druid with her strong wisdom attribute, making her a formidable tank and mid-range attacker.

Baldur's Gate 3 has a variety of companions and classes for players to experiment with. What makes the CRPG greater than many other role-playing games is the freedom players have to experiment with different classes, on not only their own character but also, their other companions.

Baldur's Gate 3: Largest Creatures, Ranked

Baldur's Gate 3 is full of terrifying enemies, but these are a step above the rest.

Thanks to giving 100 gold to Withers, players can change the class of any unit they are allowed to control, leaving players with some interesting choices about what alternate class to make their companions. With this in mind, these are by far the best alternate classes to make each companion in Baldur's Gate 3 without changing their skills.

Updated on May 24, 2024, by Megan Smith: Players who experienced early access to Baldur's Gate 3 will remember that some of the characters they had met during the first act weren't the classes they are now. Minthara, for example, was first seen as a cleric that players were expected to defeat. Some players may wonder if returning Minthara to her cleric roots may assist their play style as well as allow players to experiment with their party composition. Therefore, these are BG3's best classes for companions that may not bemore accurate to the character but are still amazing to play around with.

10 Astarion

Rogue To Ranger

Astarion in BG3
  • Best Ability: Dexterity
  • Worst Ability: Strength

Astarion already makes an incredible rogue that players are sure to want to keep on their team when picking open valuable chests or getting into places they don't belong. However, for those who wish to see Astarion test out his skills in another class, the perfect choice for him has to be a ranger.

With one of the greatest dexterity ability scores in the game from the first level, Astarion is fit for a bow, or a versatile sword if the player so wishes. This makes Astarion perfect for the back lines of combat, with a fairly decent Wisdom score that will allow them to cast some spells too.

9 Gale

Wizard To Monk

  • Best Ability: Intelligence
  • Worst Ability: Strength

While Intelligence may be Gale's strongest ability, this score doesn't do much for players, other than if they are in the Wizard class. However, many of the secondary skills that Gale is great at give him promise, like other classes, such as a Monk.

Gale has a fairly decent Constitution and Dexterity ability score, which are both perfect for the Monk class. This allows him to hold his own in combat while being on the front lines. His strength may hold him back slightly, but players can level up Gale while also increasing this score to give him a better chance at survival.

8 Halsin

Druid To Cleric

Halsin
  • Best Ability: Wisdom
  • Worst Ability: Intelligence

Halsin is one of two Druids that players can have as a part of their party. He is an incredibly powerful Druid whose skills work perfectly with the Circle of the Moon subclass. However, players who don't want to have two Druids in their party may instead wish to use Halsin's impressive Wisdom skill to transform him into a Cleric.

7 Jaheira

Druid To Ranger

Jaheira companion in Baldur's Gate 3
  • Best Ability: Wisdom
  • Worst Ability: Intelligence

Jaheira is another Druid the player can recruit during the second act of Baldur's Gate 3. She also shares similar attributes to Halsin, with Wisdom being her strongest ability and Intelligence being her weakest. However, instead of turning Jaheira into a Cleric like Halsin, players may instead wish to fall back on her Dexterity and turn Jaheira into a Ranger.

A player may wish to decide on a subclass such as Beast Master due to the animal connection this has, though even Gloom Stalker would work brilliantly for this recurring character in the Baldur's Gate franchise.

6 Karlach

Barbarian To Fighter

  • Best Ability: Strength
  • Worst Ability: Intelligence

Karlach is the only Barbarian that the player is able to recruit onto their team, other than making their own player character one. While she is incredible as this furious combatant, players may instead wish to transform Karlach into a different melee class during their second playthrough of the game.

With such an impressive Strength ability modifier. Therefore, simply turning Karlach into a Fighter at Withers may be the player's best choice, as long as they avoid an Eldritch Knight subclass, that requires a decent Intelligence score.

5 Lae'zel

Fighter To Barbarian

baldur's-gate-3-how-to-free-lae'zel-cage
  • Best Ability: Strength
  • Worst Ability: Charisma

Lae'zel is the player's other most prominent melee party member that players are likely to want on their team if they hope to survive. While this Githyanki soldier makes for a perfect Fighter, her fierce personality makes her a great candidate for transforming into a Barbarian instead.

As Baldur's Gate 3 has a packed HUD, these hotkeys can make the game more accessible.

Allowing Lae'zel to attack with such wreckless abandon will cause her to become an even more powerful unit than she already was, especially if choosing a subclass such as Berserker, which will reduce the amount of damage she takes from enemies that hit her.

4 Minsc

Ranger To Rogue

baldurs-gate-3-minsc-face
  • Best Ability: Dexterity
  • Worst Ability: Intelligence

A fan favorite of Baldur's Gate 3, many players who had played the previous titles were thrilled to see that Minsc could be recruited as a party member once more in Baldur's Gate 3. Although he's likely the last companion players will recruit, this doesn't mean that players can't experiment with his starting class and instead change it to something else.

While Minsc makes an incredible Ranger with the aid of his miniature giant space hamster, Boo, Minsc also makes a great rogue. While players shouldn't expect much of him as an Arcane Trickster due to his low Intelligence, the other two subclass options show great promise.

3 Minthara

Paladin To Warlock

Minthara scowling in Baldur's Gate 3
  • Best Ability: Strength
  • Worst Ability: Intelligence

Minthara is a companion that players were originally unable to recruit unless they proceeded on a more evil playthrough of the title. However, with recent updates, even the nicest of players can bring this Drow Paladin along on their adventures. Although Minthara's strongest ability is Strength, players may feel that their party lacks classes that use charisma.

Therefore, with an ability score of 15, making Minthara into a Warlock isn't such a bad idea. This can make Minthara into a brilliant front-line Warlock who can hold her own against enemies while Eldritch Blasting those in the distance.

2 Shadowheart

Cleric To Druid

BG3: Shadowheart somewhere in the camp
  • Best Ability: Wisdom
  • Worst Ability: Charisma

With all the Druids becoming Clerics, it's of no surprise to see the opposite happening to the Sharran Cleric, Shadowheart. With such a large Wisdom ability score, Shadowheart makes for the perfect Druid that players can experiment with, no matter what subclass they choose, either.

1 Wyll

Warlock To Bard

A close up of Wyll the Warlock in Baldur's Gate 3
  • Best Ability: Charisma
  • Worst Ability: Strength

Last but no means least, Wyll is the only strong Charisma ability companion players have a hold of from the very beginning of the game. This makes the once noble lad, now a demon hunter, a brilliant choice for a class swap into a Bard.

For players that have seen his Act Two romance scene where Wyll woos the player with a dance, it's of no surprise to imagine that Wyll can also impressively play a tune on an instrument. Besides this, the Bard class is incredibly powerful at controlling the battlefield and will encourage players to use Wyll on their team.
