Baldur's Gate 3 has a lot of characters, as would be the case for an RPG, especially one in the universe of Dungeon and Dragons. Being set in the world of D&D allows for not only a mix of different characters but various characters across numerous races. And Larian Studios did just that, with there being a good array of the vast number of races found in the D&D universe throughout the game.

Players have the opportunity to recruit several characters to their camp in Baldur's Gate 3.

Arguably the most important race in the narrative of Baldur's Gate 3 is the githyanki. The main story is a result of their kind, with many plot points involving the race. A githyanki is even present as a companion, further solidifying their presence throughout the game.

8 Ch'r'ai W'wargaz (The Inquisitor)

A Look Into Githyanki Hierarchy

Baldur's Gate 3 closeup of the Inquisitor's face
  • First appearing in Act One.
  • First met in Creche Y'llek.

Up until reaching Crèche Y'llek, players will only have heard Lae'zel mention her society, as well as most likely meeting the githyanki at the Mountain Pass. Kith'rak Voss and Kith'rak Therezzyn were the only two leader figures seen by the githyanki up to that point.

The Inquisitor offers players a deeper insight into the society of the githyanki, as he directs Vlaakith's hunt for the Mysterious Artefact. As opposed to other githyanki's very clear aggression, he is much calmer but still demonstrates the ruthlessness his species is known. On top of his character, he is also a boss fight that can prove tough if unprepared.

7 Ghustil Stornugoss

Githyanki Can Be Eccentric Too

Baldur's Gate 3 Ghustil Stornugoss looking down
  • First appearing in Act One.
  • First met in Crèche Y'llek.

Crèche Y'llek is where a majority of githyanki characters can be interacted with. While most represent their race's tenacity for ruthlessness and brutality, Stornugoss is different.

She is still dangerous, as whoever decides to sit in the Zaith'isk will nearly lose their life. Regardless, she represents how not all githyanki have a battle-oriented personality, as she is quite eccentric. She speaks like, and quite frankly, is a mad scientist, focusing on her research about mindflayer tadpoles, even to the detriment of the player and their party.

6 Varsh Ko'kuu

A Rare Display Of Gentleness

  • First appearing in Act One.
  • First met in Crèche Y'llek.

Almost all githyanki seen up until Crèche Y'llek, and indeed afterward, are aggressive and ruthless, not hesitating to kill people. Lae'zel even embodies these traits perfectly.

Yet, even before Lae'zel truly opens up, Varsh Ko'kuu demonstrates how githyanki are capable of possessing gentleness and mercy. He wishes to give the last egg in the hatchery as much time as possible to hatch instead of destroying it. Such was done to him and his egg due to his own lateness in hatching, and so he wants to do the same.

5 Ptaris

An Unconventional Journey For A Githyanki

  • First appearing unhatched in Act One.
  • First met unhatched in Crèche Y'llek.
  • First appearing as an adult githyanki in Act Three.
  • First met as an adult githyanki at the Society of Brilliance Lodge.

If the egg at Crèche Y'llek's hatchery is given to Lady Esther, she will take it to the Society of Brilliance she belongs to, where they attempt to raise it. Their aim was to raise a githyanki outside its own brutal culture, so they might develop peacefully.

The mission was somewhat successful. Ptaris became focused on morality but believed those who raised him to not be, so he killed them all. Players can find him where they can either fight him or talk him out of attacking.

4 Vlaakith

A False Queen

Baldur's Gate 3 Vlaakith talking to a player
  • First appearing in Act One.
  • First met in Crèche Y'llek.

Vlaakith, while not appearing too much in the story of Baldur's Gate 3, is an important character from which the central plot originated. As the leader of the githyanki, she is also a crucial figure in Lae'zel's story.

There are a lot of things in Baldur's Gate 3 that can easily get the player character killed. These examples tend to stand out.

However, as players progress through the game, they will find that Vlaakith is not the rightful heir of the githyanki, and is instead a false ruler enforcing fanatic worship of herself, which makes defacing her portrait even better. The Mysterious Artefact is the center of her distress, which the true heir of the githyanki resides within, able to topple Vlaakith's reign, something she desperately does not want to occur.

3 Kith'rak Voss

One Who Knows The Truth Of The Githyanki

Baldur's Gate 3 Kith'rak Voss talking to the player
  • First appearing in Act One.
  • First met in the Mountain Pass.

Although Voss initially appears as another typical githyanki character searching for the Mysterious Artefact, he later reveals himself to be a leading figure in both Lae'zel's story and in the aim of removing Vlaakith as leader. He is presented as the wiser and older figure, as opposed to Lae'zel's brash and aggressive manner.

More importantly, he shows how the githyanki's entire existence is a lie, despite how others will deny it. His desperation, once he finds out Raphael could restore their true heir in Act Three, further shows his desire for his race to acknowledge the truth of their existence instead of living in Vlaakith's lies.

2 Orpheus

The True Heir Of The Githyanki

Baldur's Gate 3 Orpheus closeup in the Astral Plane
  • First appearing in Act Three.
  • First met on the Astral Plane via the Astral Prism.

Orpheus not only changes the dynamic of the githyanki people and their existence but, more immediately for the player, has an obviously profound effect on Lae'zel. The narrative essentially revolves around Orpheus, being the one trapped inside the Mysterious Artefact shielding the player and their party from turning into mindflayers.

There aren't many NPC couples in Baldur's Gate 3, but the ones that do make an appearance are pretty memorable.

Despite what The Emperor says, Orpheus isn't a wholly vengeful githyanki who kills others at the first sight of mindflayer conversion. Instead, at the end of the game, he understands that those turned into mindflayers are not definitively aggressive, mirroring his own race.

1 Lae'zel

The Main Githyanki Character

Baldur's Gate 3 Lae'zel smiling at the viewer
  • First appearing in the Prologue.
  • First met in the Nautiloid.

As Baldur's Gate 3 has exposed many people to the universe of Dungeons and Dragons, Lae'zel is most likely the first character to come to mind when mentioning githyanki. Among the various other companions available, she is the only githyanki that can be recruited into the party, not including hirelings.

Her entire story revolves around breaking and evolving past the conventions set upon her by her society. She initially appears as a brash, ruthless, and aggressive person, to someone who warms up to the player and learns to show emotions other than hostility. Aside from her character, she can also be one of the best companions in combat, decimating enemies with ease thanks to her skills as a Fighter.
