Baldur's Gate 3 has a wide variety of spells that it has taken directly from Dungeons and Dragons, the tabletop role-playing game the title is based on. These spells can be wielded by all sorts of spellcaster classes, and each spell belongs to a certain school of magic too.

Besides the school the spell is from, these spells can also do all sorts of damage, mainly focusing on the elements. One of the most powerful of all is fire spells, as they not only burn the player's opponents but can also allow the player to control the battlefield by setting certain areas alight. With so many fire spells available, these are by far the best in Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3).

Updated January 13, 2024, by Megan Smith: The Xbox Series X/S version of Baldur's Gate 3 was released last year during December, allowing another console to enjoy the CRPG that became Game of the Year. Players are likely to have experimented with various classes during their adventure and found that those that can wield spells are incredibly powerful.

One of the greatest types of elemental magic a player is likely to use during their adventure is fire. This includes spells like the Flaming Sphere in BG3 that works as a summon to follow an enemy with a ball fo fire. With many players testing their luck with the recently added Honour mode, spells are just as important for keeping a player and their party alive.

Baldur’s Gate 3: 10 Best Upgrades That Are Easy To Miss

Throughout their Baldur's Gate 3 journeys, players will miss countless high-quality upgrades. The following upgrades are the most costly to miss.

10 Fire Chromatic Orb - Level One Spell

A 2d8 Orb Of Fire Damage

Chromatic Orb of Fire in Baldur's Gate 3
  • Wizard
  • Sorcerer
  • Rogue (Arcane Trickster)
  • Fighter (Eldritch Knight)

The Chromatic Orb is an interesting spell overall as it has the possibility of doing much more than simply fire damage. Players can choose to make the orb into different elements instead, but in this article, the fire chromatic orb is a brilliant fire spell for players to use.

Casting the orb at higher levels will increase its damage by 1d8, and therefore, casting this at level 5 would mean an enemy would take 6d8 of fire damage while also being burnt for two extra turns.

9 Flaming Sphere – Level Two Spell

2d6 Of Fire Damage That Moves Freely

The Flaming Sphere spell in Baldur's Gate 3
  • Druid
  • Wizard
  • Cleric (Light Domain)

Flaming Sphere is a spell that can be cast by Druids, Wizards, or Light Domain Clerics. While the character keeps their concentration, they will have a ball of fire as a companion that will last for ten turns, and on its go, it will be able to attack the player's opponents. When nearby enemies or objects, the Flaming Sphere does two d6 of damage.

However, it can also be used to directly attack a single opponent or simply used as a beacon to light up an area when the player faces the dark. As mentioned, this spell does require concentration, and therefore, when the player is attacked, they will have to roll to keep concentrating on their spell; otherwise, the Sphere will disappear.

8 Searing Smite – Level One Spell

1d6 Of fire Damage That Continues To Burn

Searing Smite in Baldur’s Gate 3
  • Paladin

Searing Smite is unlike any other spell in the game, as it actually does 1d6 of damage on top of the damage that is already done by the players' weapon. Casting Searing Smite at higher levels will also increase the amount of fire damage it does while also increasing the amount of damage it also does afterward due to it continuing to burn its target.

Baldur’s Gate 3: 15 New Subclasses That Could Be Added To The Game

Though Baldur's Gate 3 features some truly great subclasses for players to experiment with, it would be nice to have access to a few more.

Unlike other spells that will be mentioned in this article, Searing Smite is a spell that can only be used by one class. Unless the player has decided to play as a Zariel Tiefling, they are able to use this spell once a long rest.

7 Scorching Ray – Level Two Spell

Hit One Or Multiple Targets For 6d6 Of Damage

The Scorching Ray spell in Baldur's Gate 3
  • Sorcerer
  • Wizard
  • Warlock (The Fiend)
  • Cleric (Light Domain)

Another level two spell that can be wielded by a variety of spellcaster classes and deals a fair amount of damage is Scorching Ray. Unlike some spells that only hit once, Scorching Ray allows the player to shoot three beams of fire toward an enemy.

By using a level two spell slot, a spellcaster can deal six d6 of damage; each ray of fire will deal fire damage that ranges between two and twelve. Therefore, a player can decide to direct all three beams at one enemy or hit three enemies at once. By using higher spell slots, a player can then increase the amount of damage done by the spell.

6 Wall Of Fire – Level Four Spell

Block An Enemies Path With Fire That Stings

The Wall of Fire spell in Baldur's Gate 3
  • Druid
  • Sorcerer
  • Wizard
  • Warlock (The Fiend)
  • Cleric (Light Domain)

Wall of Fire is another incredibly powerful fire spell, although players won't be able to cast it until they have hit later levels due to it requiring the player to unlock level four spell slots. It can then be used to block off an area from enemies to either force them to walk across their death to reach the player's party or keep them far enough away from ranged attacks.

Lasting for ten turns unless the player's concentration is broken, Wall of Fire proceeds to deal a deadly five d8 of fire damage unless the individual succeeds in a dexterity saving throw, where they will only then take half the damage. On most occasions, this will still kill a player's opponent in BG3.

5 Burning Hands – Level One Spell

A Cone Of Flames That Do 3d6 Of Damage

The Burning Hands spell in Baldur's Gate 3
  • Wizard
  • Sorcerer
  • Rogue (Arcane Trickster)
  • Fighter (Eldritch Knight)
  • Warlock (The Fiend)
  • Cleric (Light Domain)

Taking a step back to the very beginning of the game. Even some fire spells in Baldur's Gate 3 that only require a level one spell slot can be incredibly crucial to a spellcaster's survival. Burning Hands is a simple spell that can be cast by nearly every spellcaster in the game, including some subclasses such as the Arcane Trickster for Rogue.

Baldur’s Gate 3: 8 Weirdest Spells

One of the best things about Baldur's Gate 3's adaptability is the comedic approach players can take to spellcasting.

Spellcasters benefit greatly from being at a distance from their target, though in some cases, this isn't possible when the enemy rushes them. Burning Hands attacks with a cone of fire in front of the player or party member, dealing a scorching three d6 of damage; it can only be made more powerful by using higher-level spell slots.

4 Hellish Rebuke – Level One Spell

React On An Attack With 2d10 Of Damage

Hellish Rebuke in Baldur’s Gate 3
  • Warlock
  • Paladin (Oathbreaker)
  • Can also be used by Asmodeus Tieflings, regardless of class.

Not every great fire spell is one that can be harnessed and used during a player's turn. Some of the best are those that players can opt to use in retaliation for being attacked. One such example of this is the reaction fire spell known as Hellish Rebuke.

As long as the player has a level one spell slot available, if that player character has been attacked, the game will ask them if they want to use a reaction spell. This will then throw a fireball at the target that can do a rand of 1d0 of damage.

3 Flame Strike – Level Five Spell

A Combination Of Fire And Radiant Damage With Each Strike

The Flame Strike spell in Baldur's Gate 3
  • Cleric
  • Warlock (The Fiend)

On the other end of the spectrum are the end-game spells that players won't be able to use unless they have truly dedicated leveling up a player in a single class. Flame Strike can only be used by Clerics and those that chose The Fiend subclass for Warlocks.

Understandably, due to being a spell that requires a level five spell slot, this spell can only be used a few times in a long rest –or short rests for Warlocks– though it's worth the sleep. One cast of this flaming strike will rid an enemy of a large chunk of their health. Besides doing five d6 of fire damage, this spell also does an additional five d6 of radiant damage too. This, therefore, has the total potential of doing sixty damage, with the lowest being ten.

2 Fireball – Level Three Spell

8d6 Of Pure Fire Damage

The Fireball spell in Baldur's Gate 3
  • Sorcerer
  • Wizard
  • Warlock
  • Cleric (Light Domain)

Fireball is a spell that continues to be as useful in Baldur's Gate 3 as it is in Dungeons and Dragons. Doing a total of eight d6 of damage as simply a level three spell is an incredible feat. Players can only imagine how much more damage this would do with higher-level spell slots.

These Baldur's Gate 3 spells may not seem overly useful at first, but they can be incredibly helpful in the right situation.

What makes Fireball one of the greatest fire spells in Baldur's Gate 3 is how it targets an area instead of just a single opponent. This, therefore, allows a spellcaster to deal with a small group of enemies that find themselves unluckily near each other.

1 Fire Bolt – Cantrip

Simple And Effective 1d10 Of Damage That Scales

The Fire Bolt cantrip in Baldur's Gate 3
  • Wizard
  • Sorcerer
  • Rogue (Arcane Trickster)
  • Fighter (Eldritch Knight)

Out of all the available fire spells in BG3, one of the greatest and a must for any spellcaster must be Fire Bolt. What makes this spell so unbelievable is how it's a cantrip which means a player doesn't need to worry about wasting spell slots to attack an individual with them.

This is also a must, especially for Evocation Wizards. At later levels, they can add their spell-casting modifier to the damage to these rolls, which means a simple cantrip like Fire Bolt will deal even more damage to a foe.
