The wizard Lorroakan is a character who players finally meet in Act 3, after entering the correct portal on the second floor of Sorcerous Sundries in the Lower City of Baldur's Gate. In Baldur's Gate 3, players can choose to side with Lorroakan, but depending on their choices – and moral compass – many players will find themselves going up against this powerful foe instead.

Though Lorroakan is hyped up throughout the game, particularly by Rolan, he's not a difficult BG3 boss if players know what to do. There are some tricky things to maneuver with the Lorroakan fight, particularly the location of the entrance and his Elemental allies. But by playing carefully and strategically, Lorroakan can be downed in just a few turns.

Move The Party Away From The Entry Portal ASAP

The party enters the boss room for the Lorroakan fight all at once, with no time to re-position, and the dialogue that plays transitions immediately into combat. As such, it's imperative to move away from other party members as soon as possible, because Lorroakan's AoE spells can decimate the most well-prepared characters if they are all grouped together.

When spreading out each party member from one another, be sure to keep an eye out for Opportunity Attacks as you move, and take care to avoid enemies altogether. If the whole party rolls well on Initiative, separating them far apart is a fantastic way to set up optimal combat. Consider using abilities like Misty Step to create even more distance, and more angles for attacks.

Take Out Summons One By One, But Keep Lorroakan CC'ed

Lorroakan is supported by a handful of Elementals and Constructs during this fight, and one of the best ways to swing the odds in the party's favor is to take out these Elementals one by one. Focusing on a single enemy is generally preferable to whittling down a group of enemies' HP because it takes them out of the Action Economy. Characters with 1 HP deal just as much damage as characters at full HP, so it's better to take them out entirely to reduce the enemy party's overall turns.

An important caveat to this strategy is Lorroakan himself, who should be Crowd Controlled in some way to prevent his extremely powerful spells from being at full effectiveness. Blind, Darkness, and some other spells are great for this, but spells that limit his movement have little to no effect – magic users can still cast spells from far away, after all. The real trick to keeping Lorroakan docile while you take out enemies one by one is to use the Counterspell reaction and Silence.

Prepare Counterspell & Silence To Sever Lorroakan's Magic

Counterspell is an essential spell when taking on other magic-wielding enemies. As a Reaction, Counterspell completely nullifies the effects of a spell cast by an enemy as long as they are within range. If Lorroakan casts a large AoE spell, or a spell on a party member that is all but sure to kill them, use Counterspell.

Counterspell is a reactive way to suppress Lorroakan's spellcasting ability, and can typically only be used once each Short Rest per party member with it prepared. However, the Silence spell can be used pre-emptively. This low-level spell creates a sphere in the target area that Silences all within. This can be detrimental to magic-wielding party members, but melee fighters won't be burdened and can keep the pressure on Lorroakan in close quarters combat.

Focus On Keeping Nightsong Alive

One of players' main priorities throughout the Lorroakan boss fight should be to keep the Nightsong alive. She is technically immortal, yes, but in terms of gameplay, her HP can still go to 0. Focus healer attention on the Nightsong over party members – you can always use a Scroll of Resurrection to get companions back up, but not Aylin.

Nightsong could feasibly take on the whole encounter on her own, and as long as players keep her healthy and buffed, she just might do that with little aid from the party. In the end, upon Lorroakan's defeat, Nightsong initiates a pretty awesome cutscene that finalizes her storyline in a most satisfying way.

If Nothing Else Works, Save Scum And Use Level 6 Spells

There is one way to cheese the Lorroakan fight, and that's with a combination of save scumming and the use of high-level Spells. Lorroakan has a measly 68 HP, making him one of the most frail endgame enemies in all of Baldur's Gate 3. Several Level 6 spells – like Disintegrate, Harm, and Chain Lightning – can deal enough damage in a single hit to completely annihilate him.

After preparing one of these spells as a high-level character, or acquiring a Scroll of Disintegrate from the Sorcerous Sundries shop just downstairs, initiate the Lorroakan fight with Nightsong. Select your most Magic-attuned character, press F5 to quicksave, then cast the Level 6 spell at Lorroakan. If it misses, just press F8 to quickload and try again – no matter how small the hit chance, the beauty of save scumming is that eventually any attack will hit, with enough patience.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available on PC and will release on PlayStation 5 on September 6, 2023. A version for Xbox Series X|S is currently in development.
