Highlights

  • Fans of Baldur's Gate 3 have found a loophole to save the beloved character Alfira from the Dark Urge - by knocking her out in the Emerald Grove using non-lethal damage and then taking a long rest.
  • If players use magic against Alfira, she will die, so it's important to stick to melee or unarmed strikes. After meeting Kagha and setting up camp, Alfira will be replaced by Quill Grootslang, but their relationship with the player seems unaffected.
  • Another loophole to save Alfira involves denying her from joining the player's adventures and killing the Dark Urge. However, this method may be buggy and result in Alfira mysteriously showing up dead at camp, so knocking her out after meeting Kagha is the safest option.

Alfira is a fan-favorite character in Baldur's Gate 3 who is destined to die at the hands of the Dark Urge when she decides to join the party on their travels. This has caused those who don’t want Alfira dying in their playthrough to avoid playing as the Dark Urge altogether. Alfira appears in all 3 acts and is also tied to the trophy Leave No One Behind in which players must save every Tiefling in the game, apart from the characters that are pre-determined to die such as Kanon.

Alfira is a Tiefling bard who quickly became a favorite for fans of Baldur’s Gate 3. In act 2 she will give players a quest to rescue the Tieflings in Moonrise Towers and upon completing the quest successfully, she will reward the player with the Potent Robe. For players who don’t want Alfira to die or want to get their hands on the Potent Robe, there is a useful loophole that will allow her to survive in the Dark Urge playthrough.

The Effective Loophole: Knocking Her Out

The most effective way is by knocking her out in the Emerald Grove by using non-lethal damage on her and then taking a long rest. However, if players use magic against her she will die, so it is best to stick with using melee or unarmed strikes on her. After players meet Kagha and set up camp, Alfira will attempt to join the player's adventures as a companion which will ultimately lead her to die at the hands of the Dark Urge, so it is best to knock her out before taking a long rest after meeting Kagha.

Once the camp is set up, players will meet Alfira’s replacement Quill Grootslang. Luckily this loophole doesn’t seem to affect her relationship with the player, although she might be a little cross. At the Tiefling party, all seems to be forgiven with Alfira, and she will carry on as if she was never knocked out by the player.

Quill Grootslang

An energetic, kind, and enthusiastic Ice Blood Dragonborn Bard, Quill Grootslang replaces Alfira as the Dark Urges first victim. As much as Alfira dying at the hands of the Urge is heartbreaking, Quill’s death equally pulls at the heartstrings. Quill comes to the camp asking for a place to stay overnight after being robbed by a group of Goblins. Her plan was to head to Baldur’s Gate to have her manuscript, a songbook called Affairs in Ancient Abeir: Songs of Draconic Love published. Unfortunately, her dreams are cut short by the hands of the Dark Urge.

Quill is passionate about love and her manuscript contains new love chants that are intended to be throat sung in Tymanther style. Tymanther is where the majority of Dragonborn live in Faerûn. She tells the player that she has never been kissed before and that she can’t stop dreaming of one day being kissed. Having never been kissed is what inspired her to write the songbook, saying that it is about love lost, lingering love, and love that is never acted on and never spoken.

The Alternate Loophole: Killing the Dark Urge

For players who don’t have a recent save and don’t want to go back to an earlier save to implement the loophole, there is another loophole that could potentially save Alfira. Once Alfira attempts to join the player's adventures, the player must deny her and tell her to leave. The next part involves having the Dark Urge killed and once morning arrives, one of the companions will need to revive them. This method does lead to some unique dialogue from Sceleritas Fel, the Dark Urge’s butler. However, some players have reported that this loophole is buggy and that sometimes Alfira will mysteriously show up dead at camp. Therefore, knocking her out after meeting Kagha is the best chance that Baldur’s Gate 3’s fan-favorite Bard will have to survive in the Dark Urge playthrough.
