During a recent series of tweets discussing 'perfect' films, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn argued that while Back to the Future may be considered a favorite film by many, it can't be considered perfect because of a plot hole surrounding Marty McFly and his parents. Gunn points out the apparent flaw that Marty's parents never notice the fact that he strikingly resembles their old friend, Calvin Klein, who helped to put the two together in the first place.

Of course, fans of Back to the Future know that Calvin and Marty are one and the same, courtesy of Marty traveling back in time. However, this apparent plot hole could still be seen as a problem by many, but now the original screenwriter for Back to the Future has offered an explanation as to why it's not a plot hole at all.

Bob Gale, while speaking with the Hollywood Reporter, explained that Marty's parents George and Lorraine only knew their friend Calvin for eight days, and that after nearly three decades rolled by, their recollection of his exact appearance may have become hazy. He notes that most people who went to school with someone for a single semester likely don't recall what they looked like, or at least not exactly.

Gale added, "So Lorraine and George might think it funny that they once actually met someone named Calvin Klein, and even if they thought their son at age 16 or 17 had some resemblance to him, it wouldn't be a big deal. I'd bet most of us could look thru our high school yearbooks and find photos of our teen-aged classmates that bear some resemblance to our children."

With that plot hole out of the way, perhaps Back to the Future really does qualify as a perfect movie.
