The hype surrounding Turtle Rock Studios' Back 4 Blood was very real, with promises of it being essentially a spiritual successor to the Left 4 Dead series. The fact that it was being developed by some of the original L4D creators only sealed the deal for many. As popular as it was upon release, there were notable issues that players had with it, which marred the excitement to some extent. It may be one of the most disappointing games of 2021 to some, though there are worse offenders, but it still has its fans, and the studio has been promising to address some of the bigger issues, which an update rolling out today should solve.

According to a recent report, Turtle Rock will be unleashing a rather meaty patch later on, which comes with some significant changes to Back 4 Blood that fans have been asking for pretty much since day one. One of the things being changed is that the game will now have offline campaign progression, meaning players can now make progress in the main storyline without having to play online with others. This is one of the major gripes for many, who felt that not being able to progress while disconnected was a missed opportunity, especially for those who don't always want to play online.

Another thing the update brings is an overhaul of the general difficulty. Many players will be aware that Back 4 Blood was tremendously difficult when it was first released, especially with the AI spawning way too many special infected, tipping the scales from high-octane action to just plain chaos. The developer has been promising to fix this for some time now, and it seems they have. Each difficulty setting has been overhauled, with tweaks to player health, friendly fire, currency, bonuses, and more.

But that's not all. It seems as though this patch is really looking at plugging holes in many of the big issues fans had with the game, but it also looks to add some additional assets as well. One of these things is the introduction of a new card type, called Burn Cards. Back 4 Blood features active and corruption cards, which alter things in the game and can give players a little boost. The new Burn Cards offer temporary assistance, such as health boosts or currency bonuses, which can be played in the safe room.

After a few weeks of promises, it seems as though this latest update will make amends for some of the things that were holding it back from being the immense success it perhaps should have been. The game was nominated for best action game at The Game Awards 2021, so it was still well-received, but hopefully this will make the game a lot better for many who found fault in it. The update will be rolling out today at 10am PT, 1pm ET, 6pm UK, on PC and console.

Back 4 Blood is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
