The third major expansion for Turtle Rock Studio's co-op FPS Back 4 Blood will begin rolling out shortly and will come loaded with goodies, including the new "River of Blood" content and a litany of tweaks and bug fixes. When hype for the game was being drummed up prior to release, the zombie shooter was touted as a spiritual successor to the beloved Left 4 Dead series, which sort of made sense given that some of the team that worked on the Valve games were also working on B4B and there were similarities in gameplay.
However, it didn't quite pan out the way the developer had hoped as many considered Back 4 Blood to be something of a letdown, with it being regarded as one of the more disappointing releases of 2021. Much of the blame was aimed at the game being riddled with bugs and poor AI, as well as a harsh difficulty spike that made for a much more punishing experience than fans were hoping for. That said, Turtle Rock continues to put out patches and new content, and the next significant update will be coming very soon.
According to the Back 4 Blood Steam page, the update will launch on December 6 at 10 AM PT, with the "River of Blood" DLC also releasing, though this expansion will be available separately for purchase. This extra content will bring a sixth act to the game, which will feature five new chapters. There will also be a new Cleaner called Tala and her companion Jeff, a modified Tallboy who is a friendly infected member of the team. The patch will also come with a new game mode, 11 new cards, 2 new weapons, new Cleaner skins, and much more. Of course, there's also a laundry list of bug fixes and some general tweaks and updates to the game.
As mentioned, this is the third expansion for the co-op FPS, with Back 4 Blood getting its Children of Worm DLC in August, which came after April's Tunnels of Terror. It seems evident that Turtle Rock Studios is more than keen to keep its latest release in good standing by offering plenty of new content, though it should be noted that the expansions are not free to download.
Over the past 14 months, Back 4 Blood has had a number of updates to improve on what fans were critical about. As mentioned above, one of the big concerns was the difficulty, and while the developer has largely nerfed things to make the game less brutal, that didn't stop the studio from unleashing a patch a few months ago that added an even harder mode.
Back 4 Blood: River of Blood will be available on December 6 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
