Back 4 Blood made a quick appearance on Thursday's Summer Game Fest to show off one of the biggest bosses in the game while also offering a way for players to get their hands on the title before its fall release. Back 4 Blood gives users who preorder early access to the game, but there will also be an open beta in August.

Back 4 Blood is being developed by a lot of the same team that created the team-based zombie shooter, Left 4 Dead, and its sequel. The game had originally been slated for a June release, but the developers eventually decided to delay Back 4 Blood's arrival until October, as the pandemic had slowed down production.

As the release date creeps ever closer, Turtle Rock Studios provides more information about what players can expect to see. During Summer Game Fest, that included a look at a massive new boss. A new short trailer gives a look at characters fighting off hordes of the mutated undead before unveiling a creature that looks like it will put up quite the fight.

With Back 4 Blood and Left 4 Dead, Turtle Rock put a different spin on the zombie shooter genre. There are the regular old human zombies shambling around from time to time, but there are also mutations that offer quite a bit bigger challenge as the game goes along.

As the video shows, there are zombie/monster mutations that have changed so much, and it's hard to tell what exactly they were before they became the creatures they are once the story takes place. That certainly appears to be the case with this massive monster that is even bigger than any of the monsters shown off in Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 back in the day. Just what has caused these monsters and mutations has not been completely explained, but that information should be forthcoming in the not too distant future.

At the end of the Summer Game Fest trailer, Turtle Rock Studios revealed that the date for its open beta will be August 5. Previously the team had said this Back 4 Blood beta would take place in the summer but hadn't announced its official date.

The game also offers "early access" to those who preorder it, meaning that those who purchase ahead of time will get to play the full game a few days before the rest of the general public can start blasting away at all-new zombie hordes.

Back 4 Blood is set to release October 12th, 2021, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
