Many fans had high expectations going into the Xbox Games Showcase, and while some of them didn't get everything they wanted, Xbox did not come unprepared. Avowed took the stage at the showcase, its first major appearance since its reveal in July 2020.

Avowed is Obsidian Entertainment's first major full-scale RPG project since its acquisition by Microsoft, and expectations have been high for the Outer Worlds, Fallout New Vegas studio. Its reveal confirmed it would take place in Eora, the setting of the Pillars of Eternity games, but would be a first-person title instead of an isometric RPG. Not much was known prior to today, but many have seen Avowed as Obsidian's Elder Scrolls since its initial reveal.

The Xbox Games Showcase 2023 gives fans a deeper look at Avowed, and that certainly seems to be the case. It showed off some of the areas, creatures, and enemies of the Living Lands before showing off the Skyrim-esque gameplay, while hinting at the bigger story. Apparently, there is some plague striking the Living Lands that is corrupting the souls of its people and creatures, and the player is the one chosen to end it. However, the narrator says it's hard to trust them because they scared them.

Of course, there are plenty of other games on the horizon, so fans shouldn't expect to learn more about Avowed anytime soon. Microsoft's biggest focus right now is the release of Starfield, with the Direct showing fans plenty of features, gameplay, and the like. It stands to reason that Starfield will dominate Xbox marketing for the next few months, while DLC and post-launch support will constantly be in the public eye too. But with its appearance at this year's Xbox Games Showcase, the future of Avowed is looking bright.

Avowed is in development.
