Recent reports suggest that Obsidian Entertainment’s Avowed is getting support from Gears of War developer The Coalition as it moves to Unreal Engine 5.3. Avowed is among Microsoft’s most important projects for 2024, and it seems that Obsidian is ramping up development to prepare the game for a successful launch.

Avowed was first announced back in 2020 during the Xbox Games Showcase. The game will be set in the same world as Obsidian Entertainment’s Pillars of Eternity series, specifically in Eora’s northern continent called The Living Lands. Unlike the previous Pillars of Eternity games, which were isometric CRPGs, Avowed will be a first-person action RPG.

Now, Windows Central's Jez Corden has revealed that Avowed recently moved to Unreal Engine 5.3 and that the developer behind the Gears series, The Coalition, will support the game’s development. The Coalition is knowledgeable about UE, helping other projects such as State of Decay 3 before, so it’s likely that the studio’s support will be focused on the technical aspects of porting the game to the new engine.

Avowed will be among the major Xbox releases of 2024. The game puts the player in the shoes of an envoy from the Aedyr Empire who is investigating a mysterious plague in a frontier region. Players will be able to create a human or an elf and use several weapons, suiting different playstyles. It was also reported that despite the game having no romance options, players will be able to recruit several companions in Avowed. The title will also have impactful dialogue choices that could matter in pivotal moments of the narrative.

Avowed's Release Date Could Be Unveiled Soon

Avowed will probably appear at the upcoming Xbox Showcase, which will happen on June 9. During the event, Avowed will likely get an official release date, and fans will also potentially be able to learn more about other upcoming games such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and Starfield’s Shattered Space DLC.

While Avowed still does not have an official release date, there’s plenty of speculation about when the game will be launched, as Obsidian Entertainment has already revealed that the title will be out in Fall 2024. Considering Obsidian’s previous releases such as Fallout: New Vegas and The Outer Worlds, however, it is possible that the RPG will be released in late October or early November, which is a traditional release window for the company.
