Avengers: Secret Wars rumors on who will sit in the director’s chair prompted a response from the MCU director who has become the foremost subject of speculation: Shawn Levy.

While not much is yet known about the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars, the project will likely seek to loosely adapt the comic book event of the same name from Marvel Comics, which was published as a 12-issue special limited series that saw some of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes transported to a strange planet-size Colosseum to face off against familiar villains at the behest of a powerful and enigmatic entity known as the Beyonder. While viewed as juvenile in part due to the merchandise tie-in with Mattel and the generally less grim approach in writing, the series was a best-seller. The film was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, with Loki scribe Micheal Waldron later attached to write the screenplay.

Despite being far from production, as it is set to be the final installment of the Phase Six Multiverse saga and the 46th film overall within the MCU, rumors surrounding Avengers: Secret Wars being a reboot device similar to The Flash and speculation about who would be attached to direct have been prevalent, with the current alleged frontrunner for the position being Levy. In a recent interview with ET Canada, Levy gave a vague response to being asked about a potential role helming the film, declaring, “I read that rumor, and that’s all I’m gonna say.” Levy is already involved in the MCU as the director for Deadpool 3, which has currently paused production due to ongoing strikes.

The interview, which focused on Levy's upcoming Netflix project adapting the Pulitzer Prize-winning book All The Light You Cannot See before diverting to discussing Marvel business via an endorsement from Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, is the first mention the director has made of the Avengers: Secret Wars rumors. Prior to Levy getting the unofficial nod from fans on social media, others were up for consideration, with Black Panther's Ryan Coogler also similarly having to address rumors surrounding his potential involvement with Avengers: Secret Wars. However, his statement was far more conclusive and dismissive than Levy's, which doesn’t say one way or the other.

Levy, who was reportedly in talks to helm a theatrical project for the Star Wars franchise after wrapping his commitments on Stranger Things and Deadpool 3, would be a wonderful choice to helm the next Avengers film, with his stellar career and more recent accolades all speaking volumes to his directorial prowess. While there is no real reason to suspect that the rumors are true, Levy didn’t do much to sway public opinion the other way, either. Whether or not this was a calculated misdirection or just an in-demand filmmaker keeping his options open will have to wait a while to be confirmed.

While that special role in bringing the film to life remains up in the air, some fans have found the prior Avengers: Secret Wars announcement concerning, with many pointing out that while Waldron's prior work on the first season of the Disney Plus show Loki was good, his more recent work on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness made his weakness at writing a large scale multiversal conflict apparent. With the significance and proposed scale and tropes set to feature prominently in Secret Wars, a director might not be the only missing link in the works.

Avengers: Secret Wars is currently set for a theatrical release on May 7th, 2027.
