Highlights

  • Chris Evans is rumored to return as Captain America in Avengers: Secret Wars, sparking speculation and excitement among fans.
  • Avengers: Secret Wars is rumored to feature actors from Marvel movies predating the MCU, creating a multiverse connection.
  • Some fans are concerned that bringing back the original Avengers cast could diminish the impact of Endgame, while others are eager for their return.

The Avengers: Secret Wars cast may have added an actor from the original team's roster, one fans haven't seen since the Infinity War saga concluded with Endgame.

Avengers: Endgame followed the team as they traveled through time to retrieve the Infinity Stones (which Thanos destroyed after using them to decimate half of the population in the universe) hoping to use them to undo the Mad Titan's actions. Unfortunately, Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow sacrificed herself so the team could acquire the Soul Stone and Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man did the same when he used the stones to defeat Thanos and his army. After the team's victory, Chris Evans' Captain America traveled through time to return the Infinity Stone to the point they were taken during the team's high-stakes time heist, returning to the present as an old man after having remained in the past to live a life with Peggy Carter.

While these fates were intended to be farewells to the Avengers actors, fans have wondered if any of them will ever reprise their roles. MyTimeToShineHello now reports that Evans has already signed his contract to return in Avengers: Secret Wars. The scooper did not specify which role Evans will allegedly play in Avengers: Secret Wars, meaning fans can only speculate that it will be the original MCU Captain America or a variant. However, MyTimeToShineHello previously reported that Evans will cameo as the Human Torch in Deadpool and Wolverine, leaving room for speculation that the actor will reprise his Fantastic Four role in Avengers: Secret Wars instead.

Chris Evans Captain America MCU

Avengers: Secret Wars is rumored to include actors from Marvel movies that pre-date the MCU, including Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man. As the conclusion to Marvel Studios' Multiverse Saga, the groundwork is being laid for actors from past Marvel movies to appear in the MCU, most notably with Deadpool and Wolverine, which features multiple performers from Fox's X-Men movies. So, it's not outside the realm of possibility for Evans to reprise his role as Captain America or Human Torch in Avengers: Secret Wars, especially considering the actor has expressed that he's more willing to return as his Fantastic Four character than the Star Spangled Man with a Plan.

However, not all fans are enthusiastic about the original Avengers cast returning to the MCU because they believe it would cheapen the impact of Endgame. While characters have returned from the dead on several occasions in the comics, more often than not, readers have consequently felt that significant comic book events such as deaths are immaterial because they can be undone so easily. The Marvel movies have largely avoided this problem. While the MCU could use the boost potentially provided by its most popular heroes after a string of box office disappointments, many fans believe bringing back Iron Man and others would be admitting defeat.

Of course, no former Avengers actor has been officially confirmed as an Avengers: Secret Wars cast member, including Evans. So, while some fans may argue that bringing back Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow is pandering, Marvel Studios may not have any intention of featuring these characters again.

Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 7, 2027.
