Deadpool 3 Fan Theory Explains How The Movie Can Retcon Scarlet Witch Into Being A Mutant

A Deadpool 3 fan theory explains how the movie can retcon Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch into being a mutant by revisiting Avengers: Age of Ultron.

While Deadpool 3 is the MCU's only 2024 theatrical release, that hasn’t stopped studio execs and insiders from deliberating on the best move to take next, and now fans know what they’re thinking. Thanks to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, it’s seemingly evident that the MCU will move forward without Kang the Conquerer occupying any significant role in the franchise. The report centered on Marvel Studios' entire strategy pushing on and dedicated a good swath of its length to the Majors situation, confirming what Marvel Studios has in store for Kang for the next Avengers movie. Per THR, the next Avengers movies will either drop Kang entirely or minimize his role, with the fifth film, The Kang Dynasty, receiving a title change to remove the character's name. Reportedly, plans to scale back Kang's role were set in motion after Ant-Man 3 underperformed.

Kang and the Timeline

While Marvel Studios dropped Majors as Kang as soon as the trial concluded, fans had no idea what this meant for the character and the narrative in motion. Many rumors circulating focused on Majors being replaced with no changes being made to the character’s role in the MCU's Multiverse saga, with actors like Colman Domingo and John David Washington rumored to be contenders to take over the Kang role. However, this new report seemingly confirms that even if the role is recast, Kang may not be the next Thanos-level threat within the MCU. There are many directions that the franchise can choose to go in now that Kang has been relegated, with the potential for Doctor Doom to take over still potent. As the main antagonist of the last iteration of Secret Wars (the comic story event that the upcoming sixth Avengers film is named after), he could be the perfect replacement for Kang and bring the Fantastic Four into the fold.

The MCU might be getting its mojo back with Deadpool 3 and Fantastic Four. If Deadpool does pan out as the studio hopes, it will bode well for the future of the MCU after what can only reasonably be described as a disappointing 2023. Fans can only wait and see what state the franchise is in when it’s time for the next Avengers film and how well the MCU's new direction does mopping up the mistakes of the past.

Avengers 5 is currently set for theatrical release on May 1, 2026.
