Avengers 5 plans have been up in the air since Jonathan Majors' removal from the role of Kang the Conqueror. Now, a new rumor from a consistent source offers fans a potential glimpse into the super team’s next adventure.

Since Avengers: Endgame released, there’s been a lot of change in the MCU, with the replacement of several original members made more challenging to navigate in light of the Marvel Studios dropping Majors as Kang and subsequently leaving the franchise’s main plotline without its central antagonist. This has led to a maelstrom of discussion and rumors about potential replacements and alternate plans for Avengers 5 that Marvel Studios has done little to clear up.

Madame Web Could Have a Worse Opening Weekend at the Box Office Than Morbius

Madame Web box office predictions suggest the next Sony Spider-Man Universe is heading toward a worse opening weekend than Jared Leto's Morbius.

While one of the main sources of conversation was discussions concerning how Avengers 5 could pivot away from Majors' Kang and toward a new storyline, some new rumors seem to point to a much less drastic course of action from the studio. According to trusted source Daniel Richtman, the MCU's Multiverse Saga won’t change despite Majors' removal. According to Richtman, current Avengers 5 writer Michael Waldron is largely sticking with the story that his predecessor Jeff Loveness had mapped out, albeit with more focus on the Multiversal aspect, a facet that Loveness had likely toned down after the failure of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Richtman also clarified that Ant-Man 3's failure led to Loveness being replaced and not a decision to switch direction.

Jonathan Majors Kang Role Future Avengers 5 Update

In addition to Avengers 5 speculation about a possible pivot, there’s also been a lot of buzz about a potential replacement for Kang the Conqueror, with Coleman Domingo addressing rumors of playing Kang. Richtman has now confirmed that there is indeed an ongoing search for a new Kang with a few solid shortlisted options but also implied that the studio was still months away from a final decision on the role. This decision is made more important by the planned reboot of the MCU with the Multiverse Saga, which Richtman confirms will be a soft reboot that sees the new crop of heroes share a reality with the Fantastic Four and mutants both within and outside of the X-Men. This new universe will also see the MCU's first original superhero, Kahhori, in live-action, a move that fans can expect within the next four years.

The decision regarding Kang shouldn't be made in haste, as salvaging the Avengers 5 and the Multiverse Saga might be the MCU's last chance to keep itself alive. Many fans and observers have concluded that Iron Man's death was a mistake in hindsight, as the deprivation of the central figure embodied in Tony Stark came at the same time as the demise of Thanos, an iconic villain built up over countless films and related projects whose defeat left the franchise begging for proper direction and cohesion. Majors' first outing failed to fill the shoes left by the Mad Titan, leaving the uncoordinated heroes with no strong opposition to rally against. The decision to stay the course seems to be, more than anything else, a vote of no confidence in Majors and Loveness as opposed to the plans laid out for the current phase.

While Avengers 5 might continue the multiverse story, reports concerning Spider-Man 4's potential villain and plot suggest a different focus for Tom Holland's web-slinger and several other street-level characters being brought to the forefront on Disney Plus programming. How these two seemingly opposed approaches will be reconciled remains to be seen, as does if these recent rumors pan out, but fans will have quite the wait ahead of them for anything more concrete.
