The Avatar: The Way of Water trailer debuted to the public in front of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, with the promise that it would be available online soon after. That time has come, as 20th Century Studios has released the official Avatar 2 trailer for all to see.

James Cameron's Avatar 2 will be released well over a decade after the original film premiered in 2009. While the Avatar 2 release date has been delayed multiple times due to the global pandemic and Cameron's own desire for technology to catch up to his imagination, there is still a significant amount of interest in the long-awaited sequel.

Disney announced the official Avatar 2 title during its CinemaCon presentation in April 2022, offering attendees a look at the trailer before it was released publically ahead of Doctor Strange 2. Of course, not everyone wants or is able to head back to theaters just yet, so the online premiere of the Avatar: The Way of Water trailer marks the first time many fans have witnessed footage from the film. That said, the trailer is actually a teaser, and therefore little about the story is actually revealed. However, what fans can glean from the trailer is that the groundbreaking visual effects and stunning images from the first film will be matched, if not surpassed, by Avatar: The Way of Water.

Most of the Avatar 2 trailer consists of breathtaking scenes with Jake Sully and Neytiri as they travel across Pandora with their new family. The locations include the lush forests fans recognize from the first film and gorgeous underwater realms. Of course, there are also confrontations between the Na'vi and humans. A new Avatar 2 character named Spider seems to present during these moments, and considering he is a human who was born on the human base but adopted by Jake Sully and Neytiri, he may find himself torn between both sides.

Despite Avatar being the highest-grossing film of all time and earning Oscar nominations (including one for Best Picture), there is still some question as to whether or not it had any lasting cultural impact, aside from the frequent conversations about its supposed lack of staying power. Only time will tell how the general public responds to Avatar 2, but based on the online chatter, avid filmgoers seem interested in Avatar: The Way of Water one way or the other.

Avatar: The Way of Water is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 16, 2022.
