Highlights

  • Zuko, the prince of the Fire Nation, is a beloved character from Avatar: The Last Airbender and went from antagonist to ally.
  • The Avatar series has spin-off material that follows the main characters into adulthood, including graphic novels and The Legend of Korra.
  • Zuko's love life is a mystery, with fan theories suggesting he may have married Mai or Suki, but the true answer is never confirmed.

One of the reasons why Avatar: The Last Airbender is so beloved is the colorful cast of characters, who managed to worm their way into viewer's hearts and stick with them even more than a decade later. The kids that make up the main cast are so lovable, and they all have incredibly memorable personalities and moments that have become a part of the pop culture zeitgeist. Perhaps one of the most popular of these characters is Zuko, prince of the Fire Nation and antagonist-turned-ally to the main group of heroes. Zuko is a lot of people's favorite character, and was more than a few fans' first crush.

The other thing that's interesting about the Avatar series is that it has a bunch of spin-off material that follows the main characters after the events of the original series, and even into their adulthood. There's a series of graphic novels that were published after the show finished airing that follow Aang and friends after the show and through their new journeys. There are also mentions of their life as adults in The Legend of Korra, as many of the main characters reappear. It's fun to check back in and see what happened to the characters fans know and love after their main adventures. One question that was present on everyone's mind was what happened to Zuko, and who did he end up marrying and having a family with?

Who Is Zuko In Avatar: The Last Airbender?

Zuko is a part of the Fire Nation royal family, the eldest son of Fire Lord Ozai and Princess Ursa. He also has a younger sister named Azula, who is also a major antagonist in the ATLA series. Zuko is a firebender, and eventually becomes a firebending master. One of his most distinctive physical features is the large burn on the side of his face, which was given to him by his father after he disrespected him and refused to duel him. Zuko was then banished from the Fire Nation and spent the next three years traveling the world with his uncle, Iroh, on a mission to capture the long-lost Avatar and regain his honor once again.

Though Zuko started off as an antagonist and an obstacle for Aang, Katara, and Sokka to fight against, he eventually came around to the side of the good guys. He realized that his father was a tyrant, and disagreed with the way he was running the Fire Nation. Zuko joined forces with the main gang and accompanied them on the latter part of their journey, teaching Aang to firebend. Zuko was determined to end the war and restore the Fire Nation back to its former honor. While Aang fought Ozai, Zuko teamed up with Katara and defeated his sister Azula, then taking his rightful place as Fire Lord and ending the Hundred Year War. This ushered the Fire Nation into a much-needed era of peace.

Who Did Zuko Marry?

Mai and Zuko in Avatar The Last Airbender

During The Legend of Korra, it's revealed that Zuko had a daughter named Izumi, who is the current Fire Lord at the time of the story. However, it's never revealed who her mother is, or who Zuko presumably married in his adult life. He and Mai had a relationship during the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender, which was a bit on-again-off-again, but resumed at the end of the series. However, it was a bit contentious after the war, and they even broke up for a period of time in the sequel comics series. Mai learns that Zuko has been consulting his father for advice and becomes furious, breaking up with him and eventually moving on with a different man, Kei Lo.

At the end of that comics run, Mai had broken up with Kei Lo and it was implied that she still had feelings for Zuko, but it's unclear whether or not they got into a relationship again. It's safe to assume that they did, as they have a complicated past and seem to have affectionate feelings towards each other still, so it's very possible that Mai was the person Zuko married and had Izumi with, and it's the leading (and probably most correct) fan theory. But it's not the only theory that people have thrown out there.

There's actually another character that fans guessed might be Izumi's mother, and that's Suki. Though this pick seems a bit out of left field at first, it makes a little bit of sense if the comics are considered. She and Zuko actually grow a bit closer during those sequel comics, after the Kyoshi Warriors become Zuko's personal guard. She was the one who accidentally let it slip to Mai that Zuko had been seeing his father, and she felt so guilty about it afterward that she started offering emotional support to Zuko.

She was always supportive of Zuko and Mai getting back together, and is still in a relationship herself (with Sokka) during the comics, but these little moments showed that she and Zuko were actually quite compatible. This led some fans to theorize that perhaps they got together at one point and had Izumi, but it's not exactly a strong theory. It's not very likely that this was the case, but it's always a possibility, especially since the real answer was never confirmed.
