Despite only having two movies under its belt, the Avatar universe is a vast one. In about six hours of total screen time, James Cameron's Avatar movies have managed to build an incredibly strong groundwork for future sequels and spin-offs to work from, with the world of Pandora, its native Na'vi people and their customs, and the villainous RDA all being given a great amount of depth already. And thanks to Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, that universe is about to get a whole lot bigger.
Announced back in 2021, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora has just received its first gameplay trailer at the Ubisoft Forward showcase, and it looks like it might have been worth the wait after all. Though Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora's gameplay looks a tad too similar to Far Cry, it's bringing plenty of unique features to the table, including the ability to soar through the skies on the back of a Banshee and dash across the vibrant plains of Pandora on a Direhorse. But one of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora's most intriguing elements is its story, and all the canon lore built into it.
Every New Clan Confirmed for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora So Far
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora revolves around a Na'vi that was captured by the RDA early in their life, and forced to fight for them. During an attack on their facility, the RDA turn on their captured Na'vi subjects, and the player-character manages to narrowly avoid death with the help of their Avatar mentor. Placed in cryosleep, the Na'vi player-character wakes up 15 years later, finding themselves back on Pandora on its Western Frontier. Set around the same time as the first Avatar movie, James Cameron himself has confirmed that there will be some crossover between the two projects, though Frontiers of Pandora is set in a completely different region of Pandora, with a different set of Na'vi inhabitants.
According to the recent Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora gameplay trailer, players will control this estranged Na'vi warrior as they reconnect with their home planet, and unite the surrounding Na'vi clans to fight back against the RDA. Being an entirely canon entry in the franchise, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora has the perfect opportunity to expand parts of the lore that the mainline movies haven't covered yet, and it looks like it's doing exactly that with its various new Na'vi tribes and clans.
The first Na'vi clan introduced in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora's gameplay trailer is the Aranahe tribe. This clan is located in the Kinglor Forest, an area of dense and vibrant vegetation, surrounded by breathtaking floating mountains. The Aranahe clan is a peaceful one, focused on using the surrounding nature to weave clothes and other fabrics. The Aranahe will apparently act as a tutorial clan for the player, teaching them the basics of hunting, and taking them on their very first flight.
Heading to the north in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will take players to the Upper Plains, large stretches of open fields filled with bright plants and open bodies of water. The Zeswa Na'vi clan resides here, along with giant mammoth-like beasts known as the Zakru, who the tribe has an inherently close bond with. The Zeswa clan will be responsible for teaching the player how to tame and ride a Direhorse. Venturing west will take players to the Clouded Forest, the site of the last confirmed Na'vi clan, the Kame'tire. Though the Kame'tire are healers, they apparently have their own "dark reason" for hiding in the misty forest.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is set to release December 7, 2023 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
