Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will be available on December 7, complete with open world co-op support. Ubisoft's open world Avatar game was first announced six years ago, and now a release date is finally in sight.

The Avatar franchise went surprisingly quiet after the record-breaking box office success of the first film, but now the franchise is back in a major way. Avatar: The Way of Water passed $2 billion at the global box office, meaning Avatar 4 and 5 are virtual guarantees. In the meantime, fans have Avatar 3 to look forward to next year, and they will also be able to play Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora this December.

On December 7, Avatar fans will be let loose in Massive Entertainment's take on open world Pandora. The new Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora gameplay revealed by Ubisoft showed third-person adventuring as players explore Pandora's gorgeous jungles on the backs of their ikran. There will also be first-person shooter gameplay, with players fighting against the RDA in battles that look pulled straight out of a Far Cry game. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will be able to experience both the third-person exploration and first-person shooter gameplay with a friend as Ubisoft confirmed that the game has online co-op support.

When is the Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Release Date?

  • December 7

Along with a gameplay overview, Avatar fans were also treated to a trailer that revealed more about the Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora story. As revealed by the trailer, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is set in the planet's western frontier, an area unexplored by the Avatar movies so far. Players take control of a Na'vi who was raised by the RDA. The RDA then starts massacring the Na'vi under its care, but the player character and some other Na'vi are saved and put in a cryo sleep. 15 years go by, and the player character Na'vi is free to explore Pandora.

As a Na'vi raised by the RDA, the player character has to re-learn what it means to be a Na'vi. Early missions will have players interacting with Na'vi tribes and being taught things like how to bond with their ikran. Similar to how the Na'vi in the movies connect to their Spirit Tree, the player character Na'vi in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will be able to connect to the planet and through that upgrade their skills via a traditional skill tree.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora looks exactly as advertised: it is an open world Avatar game in the style of Ubisoft's other open world titles. Time will tell if it lives up to the high bar set by the James Cameron Avatar movies, but it certainly has potential.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora launches December 7 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
