Elements from the upcoming Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora could carry over into future Avatar movies, and vice-versa. James Cameron’s Avatar was a global phenomenon when it hit theaters back in 2009, wowing moviegoers with its gripping visual effects and imaginative setting of Pandora, an alien planet populated by the tribal Na’vi. Ubisoft and in-house developer Massive Entertainment announced that they were working with Disney to produce a tie-in video game titled Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora back in 2017, with a trailer launched a few years later at E3 2021.

This first-person open-world adventure will put players in the role of an orphan Na’vi raised by the human Resources Development Administration and put into suspended animation. Upon waking up, the player character discovers their heritage and must rally the Na’vi tribes to fight back against the RDA in a new setting called the Western Frontier. Frontiers of Pandora has been in development for several years now, with numerous delays pushing it back until after the release of James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water last winter.

Ubisoft officially reveals the items gamers will get as a bonus for pre-ordering Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora for their platform of choice.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will have a standalone plot from the previously released Avatar films, but IGN reports that elements from the game could appear in future installments of the record-breaking franchise. Massive Entertainment creative director Magnus Jansen recently sat down for an interview and stated that one of the alien species being introduced in Frontiers of Pandora is being used in an exhibition by Avatar film studio Lightstorm Entertainment. Jansen adds that there are already talks of using some of these creatures in a future Avatar movie.

Avatar Frontiers of Pandora

Lightstorm Entertainment producer Jon Landau supported this notion at a recent media event, telling IGN that he thinks the new Na’vi clans introduced in Frontiers of Pandora could be woven into the film continuity someday. He also noted that some of the game’s new environments could also be fleshed out in an Avatar movie down the road. This implied connection between Frontiers of Pandora and the Avatar films might even be mutual, as Lightstorm vice president of franchise development Joshua Izzo revealed that elements of the next movie can be found in the game.

Fans will have to wait at least two more years to see just what aspects from Frontiers of Pandora will carry over into the tentatively titled Avatar 3, but it seems that Massive’s upcoming tie-in will have a stronger connection to its source material than initially believed. James Cameron is planning at least three more Avatar sequels over the coming decade, and it will be interesting to see where Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and its forthcoming DLC expansions fit into this ever-growing universe.
