Hajime Isayama's Attack on Titan is one of the best stories ever written. It is set in a world where humanity was seemingly living in peace within walls when, one day, Titans attack them. Eren, the protagonist of the story, then wows to fight back and thus begins the story of Attack on Titan. The series is full of twists and turns with complex plotlines interwoven into it.

Perhaps, one of the most fun parts of the story is its betrayals. The world of Attack on Titan is one where the vast majority of the people just crave survival and to give that to themselves and their people, they go to any lengths. The betrayal of friends, family, and even themselves, isn't impossible in the world that Isayama carefully crafted over the years, and among them, a few stand atop as the most shocking ones.

6 Annie Being The Female Titan

Annie from Attack on Titan

The Female Titan was one of the very first major antagonists in the series who terrorized the Survey Corps. She was quite powerful and caused a lot of trouble for the main group, even playing a part in the deaths of a bunch of their members. Her identity remained a secret for a long time, however, eventually, it was revealed that it was Annie, one of the members of the survey corpse itself.

Annie had infiltrated the group a long time ago and it was later revealed that she even had allies with her. She was trusted by the Survey Corps and treated like their very own sibling. However, Annie betrayed their trust, though it was later revealed that she had reasons of her own to do that. Nonetheless, this betrayal came as a massive shock to the fans.

5 Zeke Turning On His Parents

Zeke Yeager (Attack On Titan)

Zeke plays a very important role in Attack on Titan and fans were introduced to him a long time before his past was revealed. However, after the return to Shiganshina, the story dove into the events of the Marleyan empire, where the backstory of Zeke was finally showcased. Grisha, who was the father of Zeke, and his wife, Dina, were both Eldian restorationists.

They had placed great hopes on him and aimed to restore Eldia, however, when Zeke realized that they were going to get caught anyway and that his grandfather and he was in danger, he sold his parents out to Marley. As a direct result of this, both Grisha and Dina were sent to Paradis, where the former went on to start a new life, and years later, that is where the story begins.

3 Eren's Betrayal Of Zeke

Featured Evil Characters Attack on Titan Eren Zeke

Zeke becomes heavily involved in the story from season 3 onwards and when the truth about the Marley and Eldia gets revealed to the fans, his involvement grows even more. His plan is revealed to be very twisted as he wanted to stop the birth of Eldians altogether. According to him, this would spare them from the cruelty of the world and prevent them from being hated and ostracized like many others were.

Eren, for a significant part of the story, pretended to agree with him, however, when they got to the coordinate, Eren revealed his true colors and told him that the two were never on the same page. He then went on to go against his brother directly, and even went on to manipulate Grisha by going into the past and utterly destroying the plan that Zeke had, to begin with.

2 Zeke Betrayed The Survey Corps

Attack On Titan Zeke

As is evident by now, Zeke is a character who has loyalty to no one but his own goals. He betrayed his parents, he betrayed Marley, and he also betrayed the Survey Corps. After joining hands with them, he played along nicely until the time for him to trigger his plan came.

He went on to turn several Eldians in Paradis into Titans and even injured Levi greatly. Though he doubted Eren's loyalty quite a bit, he proceeded with the plan that he held in his mind and even got to the coordinate with him. However, that is where things fell apart for him as Eren revealed that he was always one step ahead.

1 Bertholdt And Reiner's Betrayal

Reiner and Bearthold's Betrayal

Quite easily the greatest betrayal in Attack on Titan came very early into the story. After Annie was revealed to be the Female Titan, the true identity of the Colossal Titan and the Armored Titan was being discussed. When Bertholdt and Reiner realized that they had no way around the tough situation they were faced with, they went on to reveal the entire truth to Eren in the coldest way possible.

What made this more shocking was the fact that they were comrades in arms and even considered each other brothers. They ate together, fought together, and lived together, yet, Bertholdt and Reiner were primarily responsible for the death of Eren's mother. This shocked not just Eren but the entirety of the Survey Corps and eventually started the spiral of chaos between the two factions which lasted for quite a long time.
