Undoubtedly one of the most agile and versatile of the Nine Titans, Annie Leonhart's Female Titan was a force to be reckoned from the very moment she debuted in the first season of Attack on Titan. Bolstered by the variety of unique abilities it possessed, Annie's Titan form was an exceptional weapon in combat situations, especially due to her supreme mastery of martial arts.

First spotted during the 57th Exterior Scouting Mission, the Female Titan was responsible for wiping out a large portion of the Survey Corps. Annie's combat prowess proved to be far too much for Eren's Attack Titan to handle during their first confrontation, but she was defeated in their second battle during the operation to capture her in Stohess District. After this encounter, the Female Titan would not reappear in Attack on Titan for an extended period of time, until the series' final story arc.

Origins And Appearance

Brought into the world after the death of Ymir Fritz — the progenitor of all Titan shifters and the first Founding Titan — the Female Titan was passed down through various noble families in the Eldian Empire over the course of its 1,700-year history. Eventually, it fell into Marleyan hands during the Great Titan War, which saw the collapse of the Eldian Empire as the 145th Fritz King retreated behind the Walls of Paradis.

Nearly a century later in the year 843, Annie Leonhart was chosen to inherit the Female Titan as one of the Warrior Unit members sent on the Paradis Island Operation to recover the Founding Titan. Unlike most other Titans in the story which had masculine or androgynous appearances, the Female Titan possessed a distinctly feminine design and body type. At 14 meters in height, it was slightly shorter than the Armored Titan, War Hammer Titan, and Attack Titan, but considerably taller than the Cart Titan and Jaw Titan.

Annie's Female Titan was quite similar to her human form in appearance, with short blonde hair, matching facial proportions, and a toned physique. Much of its body was covered in exposed muscle tissue, with only a few sections sheathed in skin. Its knuckles were devoid of skin to expose the bones, and the Titan also possessed muscle lining around its jaw that could expand considerably.

Adaptation And Versatility

One major way in which the Female Titan diverged from its counterparts was in its capacity to adapt and mimic the powers of the other Nine Titans. Annie was able to do this by consuming the flesh of other Titan shifters, to gain versions of their own abilities which she readily deployed in combat scenarios. This adaptive capability was at the heart of why Annie was such a powerful opponent even when the odds were stacked against her.

To begin with, Female Titan could use Titan hardening just like the Armored Titan and War Hammer Titan, both for offensive and defensive purposes. On one hand, Annie used hardening to protect parts of her body, including the nape on several occasions, as the Survey Corps' ultra-hard steel was unable to pierce through it. She also encased herself in a cocoon of hardened crystal shortly before being captured in Stohess, and was able to survive inside it for over four years.

Annie often reinforced her Titan's knuckles, elbows, knees, and shin areas with hardening when fighting against other shifters, to enhance the power of her attacks while safeguarding her body from damage. Like all other Titan shifters, she could also regenerate damaged or severed parts of her body fairly quickly. Annie has also been shown to possess some level of control over this ability, as she could focus her regeneration to just one of her eyes in order to speed up the process of regaining her vision after being blinded. Her adaptive powers resulted in Marleyan scientists conducting intensive experiments on her during the course of her training as a Warrior.

Beyond this, the Female Titan could scream to attract Pure Titans towards her, in a manner similar to the Founding Titan. The only drawback to this ability was that the Female Titan had no control over Pure Titans — unlike the Founding Titan and Zeke's Beast Titan — and they would just swarm towards its body and attempt to consume it. However, Annie was able to use this ability to create a distraction and discreetly exit her Titan's nape during the 57th Exterior Scouting Mission, when her Titan form was pinned down by restraints that she could not break through.

Martial Arts Mastery

The Female Titan possessed incredible endurance, mobility, and stamina, boosted by Annie's own intense training, which made her a clear favorite in longer drawn out confrontations. Initially, this was demonstrated in how she was able to run in her Titan form for extended periods at several instances, and still retained enough energy to fight afterward.

Moreover, this Titan also had an extremely durable, athletic, and flexible physique, which aligned perfectly with Annie's skill sets. Trained in martial arts by her adoptive father, Annie's fighting style melded well with her Titan form. She often used kicks, throws, and holds that utilized her opponent's weight and strength against them, allowing her to overpower much larger and heavier enemies efficiently.

In her first fight with Eren, Annie was able to defeat him with a single strike to the head. During the subsequent battle in Stohess, it took the combined efforts of a rampaging Eren as well as a large cohort of troops from the Survey Corps to subdue her, which confirmed her immense combat prowess. In the hands of Annie Leonhart, the Female Titan was a very versatile and effective weapon against other Titan shifters and humans alike, with few who could overcome its impressive combat abilities.
