Astro Bot will get free DLC after launch in the form of special challenge levels and other surprises. PlayStation gamers were first introduced to Astro Bot’s cute robot mascot in The Playroom, but it wasn’t until the 2018 PlayStation VR title Astro Bot Rescue Mission that the charming automaton gained a starring role. Two years later, Astro's Playroom was released as a pack-in title for the PlayStation 5 meant to demonstrate the technical capabilities and features of the console and its DualSense controller.

Astro’s Playroom quickly won over new PS5 gamers thanks to its cute visuals and nods to various other PlayStation IPs like Uncharted and God of War, and still stands as one of the PlayStation 5’s highest-rated first-party titles. Astro Bot is now set to make a return in the appropriately titled Astro Bot platformer that was announced during last month’s PlayStation State of Play livestream. Just like the previous games, Astro Bot will be jam-packed with colorful nods to PlayStation icons like Nathan Drake, Kratos and Atreus, and Aloy from Horizon Forbidden West.

Astro Bot's Boss Battles Are a Good Omen for its Ambitions

Team Asobi's Astro Bot looks to be far bigger than its predecessors, and this is particularly evident in the scope of some of its boss fights.

Astro Bot will reportedly have 80 levels at launch, and Team Asobi studio head Nicolas Doucet recently confirmed that there will be even more fun to be had after the game releases on September 6. While speaking with IGN, he said that there are plans for free DLC to be released sometime “soon” after Astro Bot’s launch. According to him, this new content will be mainly based on adding more challenge levels, which are shorter platforming levels centered around specific challenges. Doucet says there will be more to this free DLC, but remained tight-lipped on any exact details.

Astro Bot Will Have Free Challenge Level DLC And Possibly Alternate Costumes

This free, post-launch DLC could also include alternate costumes inspired by PlayStation mascots, as some of Astro Bot’s pre-order editions already offer new outfits based on PaRappa the Rapper and Bloodborne. The latter has even generated some controversy among Bloodborne fans who are still waiting on any kind of sequel or follow-up content for From Software’s hit Victorian England-inspired title following 2015’s The Old Hunters DLC.

Astro Bot already looks like it could be popular among fans of Astro’s Playroom, and its zany PlayStation State of Play trailer has already left gamers clamoring for a special DualSense controller based on the one Astro rides in the game. While this hasn’t been made a reality yet, Astro Bot will have free bonus DLC to go along with its included 80 levels, though it isn’t clear what exactly this will be aside from extra challenge levels.
