Astro Bot creative director Nicolas Doucet recently confirmed that the upcoming mascot platformer will be jam-packed with PlayStation cameos - 150, to be precise. 2020’s Astro’s Playroom was a surprise hit with fans who purchased a new PlayStation 5 console, quickly becoming one of the highest-rated games on the system. At May’s PlayStation State of Play livestream, Sony announced a full-fledged follow-up titled Astro Bot, which will launch on September 6 and sees the titular robot explore various PlayStation-themed worlds atop a rocket-powered DualSense controller.

Astro’s Playroom contained countless references to other PlayStation games like Uncharted and God of War, and Astro Bot already looks to continue this. The game’s official reveal trailer featured robots dressed up like Nathan Drake, Kratos and Atreus, and Aloy from Horizon Forbidden West among numerous others. Astro Bot’s pre-order bonuses will also allow players to dress their own Astro bot up in costumes inspired by PaRappa the Rapper and Bloodborne.

Astro Bot Dev Hints at Surprising Future for Series

Fans receive new insights from the developer of the upcoming action-adventure platformer Astro Bot, which hint at a potential future for the series.

As it turns out, this is just the tip of the iceberg for Astro Bot’s PlayStation references, as confirmed by creative director Nicolas Doucet during an interview with Eurogamer earlier this week. According to him, Astro Bot will contain 150 PlayStation-themed cameos, and he added that his staff at Team Asobi put a great deal of their attention toward these characters. “Before they were quite primitive, but now they feel much richer looking. It's over 150 [cameos], so it's going to go really deep and everybody should have their favorite ones,” Doucet explained during the interview.

Astro Bot Will Have 150 PlayStation Cameos

One of these Astro Bot Easter eggs has already caused quite a commotion among gamers, and that is the Bloodborne-themed Yharnam Hunter costume that will be included in the game’s Deluxe Digital Edition. While some Bloodborne fans felt slighted by this skin after it was unveiled, others have taken it as a sign that Sony and From Software could finally be making a sequel after so many years of silence. Nicolas Doucet addressed this during his recent interview, telling fans not to look too deeply into it as it’s just part of Astro Bot’s celebration of PlayStation history.

Before they were quite primitive, but now they feel much richer looking. It's over 150 [cameos], so it's going to go really deep and everybody should have their favourite ones.

This celebration will include up to 150 PlayStation cameos, meaning that part of the fun in Astro Bot will be searching for certain references. Astro’s Playroom contained nods to PlayStation games large and small, including third-party titles like Devil May Cry and franchises no longer developed solely for PlayStation like Crash Bandicoot. It stands to reason that Astro Bot will continue this trend, so hardcore PlayStation fans should keep their eyes peeled when the game launches in early September.
