Without a doubt, Ubisoft is enjoying the success of Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Division 2, with many excited for the latter's first 8-player raid, Operation Dark Hours. Both have improved their respective franchises and garnered praise, yet the crossovers do not end there. It appears that a poster found in Division 2 suggests that the next Assassin's Creed could take on a Viking theme and thus be set in the Viking era and territory (Northern Europe, Iceland, Greenland, Vinland).

Before moving forward, it's worth mentioning that this is not the first time a Viking theme has been teased for Assassin's Creed. Prior to the reveal of Odyssey, concept art from Michele Nucera, a concept artist at Ubisoft Milan, teased the possibility of Assassin's Creed Ragnarok that Ubisoft shut down, more or less. However, Division 2 may have revived that since-dead rumor.

This Division 2 poster has "Valhalla" written across the top of it and depicts what appears to be a Viking holding the Apple of Eden. Whether this is a generic Viking, some Norse god, Leif Erikson, or a rough drawing of the next Assassin's Creed protagonist cannot be certain, but of course, whether or not this is intended to tease anything at all is uncertain.

This flies directly into the face of the most recent rumor, which suggested the next Assassin's Creed could return to Rome, though this time it would be set at the end of Marcus Aurelius’ reign (circa 193 AD). Considering that Origins and Odyssey were set closer to the turn of the millennia, this Rome rumor may be more fitting than the Viking Era (as that is closer to 1000 AD), but Ubisoft could be looking to turn away from the Ancient settings.

Either way, there are various other locations many would like to see Assassin's Creed explore, like Japan or China, both of which have been rumored before. It's worth mentioning that Ubisoft has taken a multi-studio approach to Assassin's Creed development in the past, so any combination of these locations could potentially in the works. That said, players will have to wait until 2020 to likely find out, as it has been confirmed that 2019 will not see the release of a new Assassin's Creed.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is out now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
