While new expansions bring plenty of new content to an existing game for players to dig into, they will typically come with their fair share of problems that may not have been there in testing. Assassin's Creed Valhalla's latest expansion, Dawn of Ragnarok, is proving to be no exception to this now that players are able to further explore Ubisoft's take on Asgard. However, the problems are proving to be fairly serious as players across all platforms are reporting crashes and freezing while playing Dawn of Ragnarok.

Dawn of Ragnarok picks up some time after the events of Assassin's Creed Valhalla, diving deeper into Eivor's familial ties to Odin and what became of Asgard. As the title implies, the expansion follows the last days of Asgard and the Nine Realms as its prophesied apocalypse draws near with the capture of Odin's son, Baldr. Odin sets out on a quest to rescue his son from the fire giant, Surtr, and help save the Dwarven realm of Svartalfaheimr from falling.

The expansion proved to be a fairly large download for players looking to hop in, coming in at roughly 15GB, only varying slightly from platform to platform. While there have been glitches and bugs across the board, as mentioned above, the launch problems for Dawn of Ragnarok appear to have been worse than some may have been expecting. Several players have posted to Ubisoft's support page reporting these issues, saying the game will freeze or crash at random points during its first few hours.

This sentiment is being echoed online, especially on Assassin's Creed Valhalla's official Reddit page where multiple users have been posting about these aforementioned problems.

As problematic as it is, Dawn of Ragnarok's problems are reflective of issues many players have about modern game development and releases. Most studios typically try to keep tentpole game releases and post-launch content on somewhat of a fixed schedule, akin to major theatrical film releases like The Batman. In turn, it means developers are tasked with getting games out within a certain amount of time and, as a result, major releases like Assassin's Creed Valhalla or the latest Call of Duty can launch with multiple problems and an accompanying day one patch to address some of them immediately.

That being said, it won't be surprising to see Ubisoft work quickly to try and stop Dawn of Ragnarok from freezing mid-game or crashing altogether. It is the latter, especially, which can potentially cause further problems for some players, as all it can take is one crash for their respective platform to be damaged in some form.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
