The wait for 2020's installment in the Assassin's Creed franchise has been arguably the hardest that fans have had to face yet, at least not since the gap between 2015's Assassin's Creed Syndicate and 2017's Assassin's Creed Origins, which saw a complete overhaul from iconic publisher Ubisoft, shifting the series from its action-adventure open world roots to a completely fleshed out action RPG style. Luckily fans will hopefully not have to wait too long for a look at the franchise's next installment, known as Assassin's Creed Ragnarok, as it seems like Ubisoft is gearing up to make the announcement today.

Recent leaks have given fans a strong idea of when Ubisoft's next open world epic will launch and what it's plot may entail, however with all of this information one thing remains to be seen - the game itself. It seems like Ubisoft is starting to put its plans into motion, however, as gaming industry analyst Danial Ahmad has noted on Twitter that Ubisoft's Chinese social media accounts have scheduled a major announcement for 8pm Chinese time (6am PT, 9am ET). Ahmad also mentions, "It's worth paying attention to Ubisoft social media outside of China too. Both today and tomorrow," implying that the announcement will lead into tomorrow as well.

While it's not expected that the tentatively titled 'Assassin's Creed Ragnarok' will be that much of a departure from the recent RPG outings, the complete triumph of Assassin's Creed Odyssey has fans eagerly anticipating where the series will go next, especially since it's been essentially confirmed that this will be the series's first title to feature Vikings, and a Norse setting. Given the range of abilities and the vast open world of Assassin's Creed Odyssey, along with the recent success of titles such as 2018's God of War, this seems like the next logical step for the series and one that may even win over a large number of players generally uninterested in the Assassin's Creed series.

Interestingly, Ahmad also retweeted a post from acclaimed graphic designer and artist Kode 'BossLogic' Abdo which teases an announcement at the same time the Ubisoft China one is set to go live. Given BossLogic's history in designing incredibly detailed art for comic books and video games, it's not hard to imagine that he is tied to the project in some shape or form.

A lot is riding on Ubisoft's next entry in the mainline Assassin's Creed series after how successful Assassin's Creed Odyssey was as cementing the series as an action RPG mainstay, however with the promise of a Norse setting and having taken a break from the traditionally annual cycle for only the second year since 2009, it's safe to say Ubisoft knows what they're doing this time around.

This isn't even to mention the most exciting part of Assassin's Creed Ragnarok - the fact that the title will likely launch alongside next-generation consoles just like Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag did back in 2013, giving us an even more spectacular way to explore AC's detailed open worlds. Thankfully, it looks like the wait may finally be over.

The next installment in the Assassin's Creed franchise, tentatively known as Assassin's Creed Ragnarok, will likely launch in 2020.
