  • The word "Invictus" means unconquerable or undefeated, hinting at a multiplayer-focused gameplay where players have to remain undefeated in matches.

Back in September 2022, Vice President Executive Producer of the Assassin's Creed franchise Marc-Alexis Côté soft-announced a handful of new Assassin's Creed titles during the Ubisoft Forward Showcase. While none of these games were given official titles, they were given codenames, with those being Hexe, Jade, and Red. It was also confirmed that a few of these new titles would be launching via Assassin's Creed Infinity, a live-service platform that fans still know very little about. But there was one other project that also slipped through the net.

Shortly following the 2022 Ubisoft Forward Showcase, VGC interviewed Marc-Alexis Côté, and he revealed another new Assassin's Creed project that was also slated to be in development. Much like the rest, this project was only given a codename, Invictus. While these codenames seem pretty vague at first, they have revealed quite a bit about the game in the past, from its playable protagonist to its core themes and its time setting, and Assassin's Creed Invictus' codename could end up revealing a whole lot.

No official information is currently available for Assassin's Creed Invictus , meaning that pretty much everything from this point onward is pure speculation.

What Past Codenames Have Revealed About Their Assassin's Creed Entries

Assassin's Creed has had quite a lengthy history with covert codenames, with them usually appearing alongside the first wave of leaked assets. The first major instance of this was back before Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag was first announced, where its codename was leaked to be "Golden Age." Naturally, that's a perfect codename for the game looking back, as Black Flag is set during the Golden Age of piracy. Assassin's Creed Syndicate received a similar leak before its official reveal, with its codename being "Victory," a now clear reference to its Victorian setting.

In more recent years, Assassin's Creed Mirage was first leaked long before its official reveal, where it supposedly had the codename "Rift." This codename is a little more obtuse than the others, but in retrospect, it seems like a reference to its main protagonist Basim, who has a sort of rift inside himself between his own memories and those of the ancient Aesir Isu Loki. Ubisoft got ahead of the leaks for its latest set of Assassin's Creed games, confirming a codename Jade, Hexe, and Red, and their codenames all seem to hint at their settings, with Jade referring to China, Hexe being the German word for witch, and Red seemingly referring to Japan.

What Assassin's Creed Invictus' Codename Could Refer To

Based on all those that have come before it, Assassin's Creed Invictus' own codename likely hides some clue about the game's potential setting. The only official piece of information fans have about Assassin's Creed Invictus is that it'll apparently be a multiplayer-focused title. The word "Invictus" in Latin roughly translates to unconquerable or undefeated, which could refer to the game's apparent multiplayer focus, with the player having to remain undefeated in multiplayer matches.

But the codename Invictus might have a slightly deeper meaning. It's not currently clear where or when Assassin's Creed Invictus will be set, but its codename does seemingly tease one obvious location and time period. Being a Latin phrase, "Invictus" naturally conjures up ideas of Ancient Rome. While players have already been to Renaissance-era Rome in the Ezio trilogy, they haven't been to Ancient Rome just yet, and aside from a few Roman references in Origins and Valhalla, that whole time period is pretty much left untouched by the wider Assassin's Creed lore, making it a perfect backdrop for a multiplayer Assassin's Creed game.
