A lot of gamers have had their eyes on the future of the Assassin's Creed franchise as of late. The historical action games could be releasing multiple titles in the near future, but it seems that Ubisoft is ditching Assassin's Creed's past by removing the online services of some of the older games in the franchise. Still, Assassin's Creed will go on, and since a new, smaller game was teased earlier in the year, fans have been scrambling to get as much information as they can on the upcoming game.

Speculation had led many to assume that the next game in the franchise would be Assassin's Creed Rift, a smaller game focused on Basim, a character who appears in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Reportedly, Assassin's Creed Rift would be set in Baghdad, and feature a smaller map than the ambitious play spaces of recent games, with a much more intimate story as well. However, yesterday a leaker claimed that all of this information was incorrect, and that the next Assassin's Creed title would be set in the Aztec Empire.

While this rumor created a lot of hype among Assassin's Creed fans who have wanted to see the Aztec Empire in the games for some time, Jason Schreier, a Bloomberg reporter, has debunked this claim on Reddit. He firmly states that the next game coming for the Assassin's Creed franchise will be Rift, which is reportedly set in Baghdad as stated. This corroborates the leading theories that fans have mostly subscribed to, and while it would be interesting to see an Aztec Assassin's Creed game, it would have deterred wildly from the information gamers already have.

Schreier also implied that an Aztec Assassin's Creed wouldn't be arriving for some time, as he stated that Assassin's Creed Infinity will not feature the ancient empire as one of its settings. Assassin's Creed Infinity will reportedly feature multiple historical settings for players to access at once, and could be the most ambitious entry in the series to date.

While Schreier's comments do suggest that Assassin's Creed won't venture to the Aztec Empire anytime soon, it isn't impossible for Ubisoft to surprise its fans. Hopefully, there will be at least an inkling of official information on the future of Assassin's Creed at the event Ubisoft has planned for the franchise in September. Then, gamers will know which historical setting they'll be stealthing around in for sure.

Assassin’s Creed Rift is reportedly in development.
